I drive a E55T, SLK55 and 65 Mustang Conv.
The E55T has 87 miles on it...

Hi all,
Ok, I finally got confirmation that the car is at the dealership and they are due to deliver it tomorrow morning. They also said on the message that the car has 87 miles on it and that 85 of these were put on as "test" miles by AMG. They have a letter from MB that says this. Does this really happen or are we being hosed?

Good question. I have never heard of this, but there arte a lot of things that I have never heard of. I know that I would not be too happy about it because I wouldn't know how it was driven. I think MB should compensate you for the use of your car. You should be WELL compensated. Good luck.

Only if the runs were done back and forth on the same track!

That's a TON of miles to have on a new car.

When I picked mine up in March, it had only 7 miles. What the heck were they testing?

Considering you waited so long for it, I'd want a more detailed explanation. What does the letter say? Regardless, congrats!!!

I've seen this before. They select random cars for a road test inspection. There's a Maybach sitting in the showroom at the Phoenix Motor Company with the same letter stuck on it.

AMG has been known to test cars at random after being fully assembeled to ensure overall quality, reliability, and make sure that the engine and drivetrain along with the chasis and suspenstion work as advertised and designed. Nothing to be alarmed about at all Lady Wolf. congrats

True, I saw an SLR in the showroom with a letter stuck to it stating the same thing... I bet the guy that got to "test" that one was one happy camper. :p

Well, congrats on the E55T!!!!!!

Can't wait to see pics!

It's called Flint Grey... personally I love it. Depending on the light it can look anything between a slate blue and a grey. That said, I love the E55 in black... just don't have the patience anymore (had a black SL500) to deal with that color.

I still don't think they should be "testing" cars that they intend to sell as new period... and it strikes me as VERY odd (dare I say illegal?). Why isn't AMG "testing" cars that don't go directly to the consumer?

It's hard to ensure quality control if you're building a product just to test...

I’d be mad... but Ill ask my friends at Edmunds.com they are pretty good.
Congrats on the car. I’ve packed 100 miles on my E55T but I’m going nuts cause I haven’t reached 1000 miles yet and I cant drive it hard.. hehe
KIM you are going to love it. I’ve gotten so many thumbs up in these last two days.

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
That would suit me just fine....

given the state of quality control at MB these days. I'd much rather know it works. Have you seen some of the horror stories on these boards about cars that didn't make it home from the delaership, or have been dead in the first week? I think the letter would make a great conversation piece too. And curiious, why would 87 miles matter unless you planned on driving it only 100 miles? Or you planned on trying to turn it for a profit (not too likely in this marketplace).....

I'm with them.....just random testing Kim. AMG is freaky about interior rattles and with so much more interior room to rattle, I bet they tested it well just to be sure.

I appreciate the non-rattle policy at AMG....mine is an 03 and still nothing....just as tight as the day she was made.

Of course someone will chime in below this that they're car "rattles like crazy", but on the whole.......you know.

Glad you finally got it....dont forget pics.

Not for resale...for the socer Mom who needs to cart the kid's in style. My worry was that they gave the car to someone to "test" for 50 or 60 miles who buys a lot of cars. Think about how you or anyone else on this board would drive a car like that if you KNEW it was never going to be yours. It seems like they do it under the AMG break in guidelines which releives me quite a bit. No driving the car like a maniac for 80 miles and then n ormal breakin for the rest. I do want to see what the letter says though.

The test they were talking about was done by a professional. Porsche still does this, to my knowledge, to every single car that comes off the assembly line. They take it and immediately do a top speed test and transitions around a track for about 40 miles or so. To my knowledge, they have the ability to quickly reset the odometer though. I think this slows down their production, but you rarely hear of a bum 911 coming off the line. Anyway, the jury is still majorly out on how to break in an engine. Some people claim you should drive like you stole it from day one, and some say follow the sticker. For horsepower and torque, but perhaps not longevity, you should do the former in an organized manner. I broke my c55 in by varying it between low and high rpm on a deserted road. Holding it at different rpm. Supposedly this is the best way, and I haven't had a hint of trouble and the car seems quite a bit faster than the c55 I test drove at the dealership.

I had 40 something miles when I got my clk55 and a sheet with the car from AMG about the testing and the mileage handwritten on it. I'd rather have them find something wrong instead of me and having the dealer try to fix it.

That's what they tried telling you at the beginning....."Factory Letter to prove". Instead of starting this thread, you could have use the time to plan your next soccer-route. J/C!!

I agree with xray. I got mine in March with 16 miles and I thought that was 15 too many. I don't know what's a good number, but over 50 miles seems excessive.
