much love and mad props to my stang homey who hooked us up on the ccw wheels place. ordered a set of 16, yes 16, no i didnt studder six-friggin-teen inch by 9.5inch wheel with mt 255-50-16 mt dr's. he took all of my measurements and said if they dont fit just send em back but i know they will and ill make 17. hes a real speed freak and just wants whats best for the customer!!!

I think I might get a set of 20's for the X5! Much cheaper then the HRE's in 22 I was thinking about.

Sweeet. Why 16's and not 17's? You want more sidewall? How sure are you that they will clear the brakes?

 

rubber is lighter than steel. and the greater the sidewall the greater the traction. might get in less than 2 weeks. SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

 

Those are CCW Classics. The do not and probably won't make them in 19 or 20" sizes as these are made to be mainly track wheels. Supra, Vette and Viper guys have been using this combo for several years.

More sidewall = more surface area to absorb the force of launch...less wheelspin......thus those famous crinkle tire Pro Stock launches.

Mickey D/R have a little stiffer sidewall though.....can't wait to see the benefit. Cool part is now, you can put full slicks on er...inner tube and all.

Course, that ignites the Bias and Radial debate......ugh.

 

yea the gut said if you go bias you got to go skinny/fats. i dont want to change a whole set just to blast a time or two a year! and a friggin tube!!!

 

Since I'm hookin' almost right away with WOT @ 18 psi on the BF DR's, there are only two ways the new rim/tire scenario will help me:

1) The increased traction (even with a less wide tire going from 275 down to a 255) will allow me to power load a bit more before launching and without breaking traction.

2) The increased traction will allow me to hit the spray earlier than before.

Both would be good. My lack of science/physics still makes it hard for me to understand that a 255 stickier tire on a 16" rim will hook better than a 275 BF DR on a 17" rim. I guess we'll see soon enough.

 

I would just go all out and do slicks and skinnies with all bias plies. You wouldn't want to mix radial and bias plies either. Its not like 2 more tires is that big a deal anyway. Just throw the skinnies in the backseat when you go to the track since the slicks will probably use all the trunk space. If you're willing to go down to 16" wheels, just do the bias-ply and not worry about traction .

 

He wasn't sure he could do skinny rims to fit our cars but I didn't push him much on it. That might be too much hookin'.

 

These are track wheels buddy. Lightweight and strong. Would look stupid on an X5 not to mention 17" would probably be the biggest size they would manufacture.

 

I am glad you found what you're looking for. Hopefully those 16's fit. CCW is a sweet company...they'll take care of you no matter what happens. I want some 18x11 and 18x9.5 classics for my car in black, but I can't afford it. lol.

My suggestion for launching would be heat the tires up pretty well 6-10 second burnout, then keep esp off...put foot on brake as hard as you can, put foot on gas as hard as you can without moving, then just dump the brake foot and mash the gas foot...I don't see why a 1.5-1.6 60' isn't possible. Remember, a little spin off the line isn't the worst thing ever. It's better than esp kicking in and slowing you down.

 

hey thanks for the hook fella. i actually pulled a 1.77, 60 in my car with 19's no dr or lsd. and for these cars you need the tc on. it really doesnt intervene as much as you think and will always get you the best times especially if you are hooking up. cant wait for derek to fire-em-up!!!

 

I always run in dyno mode in order to heat the DR's. Peter, you won't be running with ESP on anymore. Welcome to dyno mode, I guarantee it.

You are approaching the limitation of the stock stall converter on these cars, you won't be able to come out harder without increasing the stock speed. I seriously question how much benefit with the stock stall speed you are going to see by going to M/Ts.

If you want to go quicker, I honestly think you are going to need more MPH. Get yourself a set of the HRE C-series wheels, and the two piece rotors from Evosport. Drop yourself a good 100lbs+++, and that'll help improve your trap speed. It also reduces unsprung weight, which is easier on the drivetrain = more reliability, and less resistance when launching. Depending on how extreme you want to go, there are a couple of other weight saving ideas you could do as well.

Only in dyno mode. With just "ESP OFF," you can't powerbreak thus you cannot heat the tires up.

Marcus, I hear ya. I'm thinking the biggest advantage will be the ability to get on the NOS earlier in the 60' section. My trap speed is there, my 60' of 1.78 is what's keeping me out of the 10's in my opinion.

 

They make rims in 20x10 and sizes wider.
Plus I like track wheels, they are light

 

but in the wetbox, when it was dry 10 times, i can smoke em as long as i wanted? i know what dyno mode is but if i am smokin em am i missing something. help me out spero, you saw it!!!

 

Doesn't sound like you are missing anything. You are the only person I know that can powerbreak for 6-10 seconds while not moving in a MB without being in dyno mode that I know. My car will not powerbreak at all with ESP off and must be in dyno mode.

 

Derek - I powerbrake in my car with ESP off all the time. I don't do extended burnouts, but I can make people smell smoke. Do you think that my ESP may not be functioning properly?

Edit - I am not still for six seconds. Maybe that's the key.
