I went to my local muffler shop to see what they could do. Well, he only does aluminized and won't remove the cats. Anyway, I was able to have the car on the lift. From the looks of things, the exhaust system looks to be one of the least restrictive factory systems I've ever seen. What interests me is how people say they remove cats and replace them with straight pipe. Looking at the pictures I took, it looks like it would be rather difficult to do such a job without various bends. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a pic of the section right after the cats where there is a very slight bend to clear a support bar, which seems to complicate the job quite a bit. Has anyone taken pics of their cat/resonator delete job?

I have some extensive pics of an X pipe I made to replace the resonator. Unfortunately I am not sure how to post them. I will figure it out and post by this week....

X pipes work better in a NA engine but an H pipe works better in a forced induction engine. Mercedes was on the mark down stream. Too bad they don't make manifolds worth a hoot.

I agree, but we already have a cross over tube towards the front of the exhaust where it shoud be. The only reason i did the x pipe was to get a smoother sound at idle (more stock sounding) when you stab it though, it sounds nice and deep but not over the top. Other than the fact that mine is nice becuase of the workmanship and sound, it really does nothing for horsepower. The same goes for H, Y or straight pipes as a delete for the resonator on our cars.

I took my resonator off, too but not the "secondary" cats. Is that legal in California? Does MB service care?
Thanks

One of my mates just got a 2004 Maserati with the Ferrari V8.
Parked beside my E55.................mine sounds like Toyota compared to his.

Does removing the resonators make the exhaust sound deeper, louder or both? Is it too loud for daily use?

Do they have to be "cut" out and a straight pipe welded in place or can clamps do the job? (so I can easily replace them prior to trade in)

Anyone with photos?

Thanks
