AMG engine longevity?
AMG engine longevity?
Hi All-
I was just wondering if anyone has factual or anecdotal data on whether or not AMG engines have a different engine longevity compared to standard MB engines? Given that AMG engines are hand assembled and utilize better balanced connecting rod sets, different crankshaft, hollow camshafts, stronger vave springs, etc. do these contribute to any difference in the life of the engines?
I don't seem to recall seeing any type of data collecting or trends on this forum related to how many miles AMG engines can run before they start having major problems or begin wearing out. Anyone have an idea of the highest mileage AMG engine out there? What type of total miles should one expect from their AMG engine before a rebuild is required? Has anyone had their AMG engine rebuilt? If so, at what mileage?
I guess now that there are supercharged engines I'm sure that's another big factor that comes into play but let's assume we're talking about normal aspirated engines only to keep it more apples to apples comparison with standard MB engines.
Just was pondering this thought and I wanted to get input from the forum. By the way, I have an '02 E55 with 14.5K miles, stock except for full Kleemann suspension.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Not sure it fully addresses your question, but here goes...

No data whatsoever, however AMG engines are built to the exact same reliability standards as a 150hp run-of-the-mill 220 CDI, whether its a 5.5 V8 or a 6.0 V12. You have all heard of Mercedes engines clocking up 500K miles easily, if driven with care <- (crucial word) there is no reason why an AMG shouldn't last as long. During endurance testing the engines are put through absolute hell, and return great results.
But how can you resist not abusing that thing ?
