5.5L with turbos instead of S/C?
Anyone thought of tweaking the beast with turbos and removing the S/C? I admit quite a radical step but the motor is built to run on boost ... would be interesting never the less.
If outright topend HP is the goal this mod could be the ticket....
Mbe turbos from the V12 could be the answer...
Actually you could leave the S/C in its place and have a manual switch to turn it on (in addition) when and if required :v :v :v

SL 65 AMG and E63s AMG
You would have to have deep pockets to assault the change over. MB parts aren't quite as cheap as Chevy SB to play with. I certainly don't think I could tackle a project like this without immense resources not available to me.

Yup fair enuf - not to mention the time to invest. Would be interesting to see what character and power the motor has though...
Anyhow moot point...

wouldn't you have pretty much the same character but on a lesser scale than the 65 biturbo cars' engines do? i've never driven one of the v12 cars (naturally aspirated or otherwise), so i'm talking out of turn here, but if you've driven a 500 and compared it to a 55 SC, and driven a 600 and compared it to a 65 BT, i'd think you could come to some conclusions about the character of a 55 BT car.
would save a whole lotta money that way too!

No longer car shopping...
The engine might hold up but the tranny would probably fail if you HP over 500. There was a guy on the CLK55 forum that had his engine pretty much completely rebuilt, re-bored, etc. Took about 2 years and may even have put a turbo on in instead of the S/C. His final #'s were around 650HP. I don't know the cost. I HAVE toyed with the idea of pulling the AMG engine out of a wrecked late-model AMG to drop into one of these Cobra 427-style project cars. Seems to me that the stock 352HP core and tranny would be a great fit into one of those "toys". Saw a wrecked 01 CLK55 that went for about $12K about 6 months back.
