Talking Break in is HARD

But...
I just looked at the sticker on the window and figured out that I can REALLY start hammering the car 70 miles sooner than advertised in English.
1000 miles does not = 1500 Km.
930 it is

Break it in the way you are going to drive it!!! I have never heard of one problem that came from someone getting into their new car and driving it the way it was meant to be driven. I ran mine the moment I bought it. No problems and the car has run 12.17 in the 1/4.

I agree, just being cautious. I may do a full throttle run tomorrow :v
What was your trap speed and where did you run?

My best trap speed was 117.8, but when I ran the 12.17 it was only 114.5. The temp was a little warm and I think that hurt my trap speed a little.

Nope! It's bone stock. Like I said, break it in the way you plan to drive it.

As piston rings undergo several heat/cool cycles, they get tempered. They harden. The best opportunity to properly seat new rings is to bring the motor to the redline for short intervals followed by mid-range cooling. You will seat the rings, temper them and enjoy more peak HP and better compression. (I think).

Read the link. I've heard that before. Makes sense to me. I knew a guy who rebuilt motorcycle engines for racing. First spark after rebuild...straight to redline. He swore they made more power that way.

NewMoses - I plan on breaking-in the CLS55 this way. I also have a close friend that owns a SL55 and he pretty much broke his in the same way (minus the oil/filter changes) and it runs great. - Bob

I've followed the same procedures that Bob (Evolution Marine) has explained. I do the same thing with every car I own.

My car is a pretty strong motor with no issues to date to speak of. Very smooth idle and great power.

By the way, the engine in my '83 911 is from a '98 993 that was owned by a Porsche mechanic and track addict in Germany. It was broken in hard. I have had the car on the dyno and it makes more power than it should and runs as smooth as silk.

breakin procedure

I read an AMG enginners article a few months ago on an airplane that basically stated that due to the materials, tolerances, and synthetic lubricants used in AMG engines they do not need any break in.

He was using an example of the wide range of brand new AMG vehicles that go to the race like driving schools and they are getting hammered right out of the trailers with no miles on them, all day long, day after day, without problems.

With this said... EMarines theory still makes alot of sense when you are talking about cars that cost adult money.

I think that the break in period is for the driver as much as it is for the car.

AMG engines are all run and tested on a dyno at the factory, while this doesn't completely qualify as break in I'm sure you can run them hard from the start as long as it is not for an extended period of time.

pas - The AMG Motors are turned over by an external motor and hooked up to sensors that determine if the Motor has met specs. - Bob

So here's a serious question, coming from a guy who plans on driving his 100k investment into the ground over the next decade or more:

Say i go with the program for break-in (which I have been reluctantly doing so far), driving the car like a wuss and using only the "C" mode for the tranny; low revs, no crazy dragracing through beverly hills on santa monica (the most red lights in a single area i've ever seen)...

After 1000 miles of this, my car will think i'm a granny and will have "learned" my driving habits based on pretty aberrational driving.

If I unplug the battery for an hour or so at 1000 miles, when i plug it back in, will the learning curve be reset so that I can "re-train" the tranny etc. to be more aggressive? Is that all there is to it?

And thanks, but please no responses in the "break it in like you're gonna drive it" vein; I'm familiar with the argument, and if I was gonna flip this car in a couple years I'd be all for it; this time I'm going to follow the mfr's advice, though.
