Extended warranty...or trade up for newer beast.

My 4 year warranty is up November 06 (car built Nov 02).....just wondering what your input is. Should I even bother looking for extended warranty or just ditch er next year and snag an 05. I love my car, but would NOT love driving her without coverage on a 35,000$ motor/5K tranny/4K rear end among others on these known to be problematic beasts.

Are extended warranties a waste of time (meaning very little coverage for what you get) and does Benz sell them. Would rather have them cover it other than an outside company....I guess.

Thanks for any input.

extended warranty

I have a two year extended warranty on my 2000 that I bought last year from a car dealer friend of mind and he placed me with of all places Nissan Motors Insurance division. The coverage is good and the deductible is $200.

If I am not mistaken you can buy extended MB coverage from a MB dealer as long as the vehicle is still under factory warrranty.

Jakpro,

Contact your local stealer and ask about the extended warranties. They are pricey, but IMO worth it. In my experience with the MB certified warranty on my old C32, the coverage is great. Had a tranny problem repeatedly and the Dealer (MB of Orland Park in Chicago, only dealer so far I'll call "dealer") replaced the tranny under warranty. I purchased the car with CPO and one extra year. Worked out for me. I did the same with my current '03 E55. I'll definitely be trading up before the warranty is up!

Call your dealer but remember they are negotiable even though they may tell you they are not.

Wow. It's hard to believe the E55 has already been available 4 yrs!
How many miles are on it? If you love it that much, I'd just keep it and get the warranty.

I figured that I would keep mine for 5-7 years so got an extended warranty when it was new. So far I think I'll get my money's worth. My son is drooling and thinks I need to give it up after 4 years, (and donate it to him) HA :p

My warranty is up in 2008 and I'll probably trade it in when the new W212 comes out or get a CLS AMG around then. I would get the extended warranty and ride it out until you're done.

My advice: Don't bother and snag an '05. Or, wait another two years and pick up a Starmarked pre-owned S65

Two reasons:

(1) The original owner must purchase the Mercedes-Benz Premium Factory Extended Warranty within the first 12 months of ownership. It will be extremely difficult to locate any aftermarket policy that will cover AMG cars.

(2) 99% of warranty companies are not mod-friendly. I can't imagine any cost-effective extended warranty that would afford coverage with the mods on your E55.

so the net net is that we cannot buy extended "certified" warranties from MB unless the car is <12 months old...right? Are there any dealers out there who are selling certification to owners out of that period?

The original purchaser much purchase the extended warranty during the first 12 months of ownership. A factory extended warranty offers the most secure warranty with no deductible.

I've "heard" that some dealers offer the Daimler-Chrysler extended warranty after the initial 12 month period, but the coverages and prices may be substantially different.

Decent extended warranties can be had for non-AMG and non-V12 cars reasonably. It's the higher-end, performance-oriented cars that extended warranty companies shy away from. There was a thread in the CLK55 forum not too long ago about aftermarket extended warranties for AMG cars, but they were only offered in specific states. Do a search....you should find the thread.

Let us know if you find one that covers AMG cars.

Let me add that this is not the same as a Starmark warranty, sold with pre-owned cars at MB dealerships. However, cars must be "Starmark Certified" to have that warranty.

Hey Chappy,
any idea what the ballpark price is on one of these extended buy-in-first-year MB factory warranties, and what the period/mileage of extension amounts to beyond the standard 4/50k? this is the first i've heard of it, and it's right on point with what i'm looking for in connection with this, the most expensive thing i've ever bought.

the stealer i bought from had its finance guy try to sell me the extended warranty on the date of sale, said it was good that day only, and when i asked him whether it was through MB or third-party, he said it was third-party, so i politely declined (while losing my respect for the guy in the process). to hear that MB offers this type of protection is a welcome thought.

thanks for your additional info.

The extra year on my CPO E55 went for $2400. Expensive, but one trans issue, brake module failure....

When I bought my CPO C32 years ago, I was pressured by the salesman to buy the extra coverage right away, because after the sale it would not be available. Then when I signed the papers with the Sales Manager (I chose not to opt for the extra year knowing I would be graduating to the E55) he told me that I could purchase the warranty from MB later as long as I did it through the same dealership.

Cost depends on the car. First, get a quote from your MB dealer, then call the dealership in Chico, CA (Courtesy Motors) and compare. If you are the original owner, you have up to one year to purchase the coverage.

To my knowledge, MB extended warranties will go up to 3yr/100K miles, but may be offered for an additional 2/100 or 1/100 as well. READ THE CONTRACT! Even the MB extended warranty has exclusions. Ask for a copy of the contract in advance.

The warranty MSRP on my 2002 CLK55 was $3,490, if my memory serves me correctly. I paid about $1K less by calling Courtesy Motors. After I purchased the contract, I made sure I was in MB's computer system as having the extended warranty....which I am

Don't wait until the last week of the factory warranty before shopping. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to get all the paperwork in order.

ONE OTHER NOTE: Most MB dealers (including the Chico dealership, to my knowledge) also sell aftermarket (3rd party warranties). Make sure you request a "Mercedes-Benz Premium Extended Warranty" if that's what you want.

Good luck

2004 E55
I bought my E55 in April 2004 and had 12 months to go for a MB extented warranty which was 3 years 50,000 miles. I did the extension in early April 2005 and it cost $3,410. The business manager said the price for 2005 models had increased to $4,880. He printed out the extended warranty on the spot and said I was in the MB system effective immediately.

I guess they've increased in price somewhat
