M5 Video at Roebling Rd. this past Saturday
This is at the Roebling Rd. roadcourse in Savannah, GA from this past Saturday. Car handled amazingly well for being so heavy and pulled so hard above 100 mph. I'm probably traveling around 135 mph when I pass the camera and hit just over 150mph when I start to brake.
Only two things that bothered me about this car on a road course:
1) A bit more brake fade than I expected. Very similar to the E55. I assume a brake cooling mod could fix it.
2) Threshhold braking got the rear end a bit loose. I think this is a product of the car being new to me (thus I was not as smooth with it as could be) and the stock continentals that are on the back.
Awesome car if you want high end power, high level of comfort (though a level below the E55 imo), and a very engaging driving experience. I still can't get over it automatically rev-matching on paddle downshifts- sounds like a Ferrari.

Guess I am opening myself up for a zing, but what the he(_*&.
What is Bimmer using for brakes....looks like you hammered it pretty well and not a mention of massive brake overheating. All guys ever talk about when tracking the 55 is brake over heat problems.
Are AMG brakes really that bad?? Are M5 brakes really that good? What gives.
Can anyone gimme a little info on what B is using that MB is not.
M5 is only bout 3-400lbs lighter correct?

Guess I was getting used to hearing the word failure instead of fade with the 55. You have tracked it more than most people so you would know.
From Gid's gold calipers to the Aussie guy getting the red stop sign on the dash.
Would you consider the brakes better, same or worse.
Thanks for the info D.

I've never had the E55 on a real road course so I must defer to others. If folks are saying brake failure then that's not a good thing. I road the M5's brakes hard and there was some fade but overall they performed very well.

I believe it might have to do with the fact that the ESP still functions (albeit much more leniently), even when it is turned off. On the track, the brakes would probably be working full-time trying to keep the car from getting too sideways.

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
Have you SEEN the rotors and calipers on the M5?
You must really have to toss that thing to get them to heat up or fade...incredible looking, and makes the E55's look inadequate.

on the W210 I never knew there was a brake temp warning. or did u get the brake pad sensor light to come on? I have melted many brake pad sensors and they tend to just pop out at the track. The C32 i use at the track always throws a front pad sensor in the first session and the car flips its lid thinking the pad is warn out.
thanks for the info.

One thing i would like to mention regarding brake fade and over heating issues.
Most over heating issues is the fault of the driver, most owners have no idea on how to get around a track and ride the brakes and brake in all the wrong areas wich mess's you up for the next turn wich then makes you brake more etc, etc etc, THATS WHEN YOU GET OVER HEATING PROBLEMS. now normal fading is to be expected, unless you running ceramic brakes your gonna get brake fade in any 4000 + pnd. car.

ted what brake warning did you get. I get the overheated brake light on all my W211's but that is because SBC compensates for fade up to the point where the brakes turn to mush.

...........I don't claim to be an excellent driver, but the brakes oveerheated on their own due to ESP intrusion. Your statement is probably applicable to cars without ESP. When top gear tested the CLS55 earlier this summer, they had the same problem of intrusive ESP over heating the brake pads.

thanks for that info. clearly we are not the only ones having this happen at the track. the c32 i drive at the track has a 4 wheel stoptech brake kit and runs pagid blacks so the sensor gets a serious melting!
