M5 weighed on M% forum

Check it out.
Looks like BMW under reported the weight of the new 5

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=61701

Hmmm looks like it weighs as much or more than the E55.

If I did my math right (which I probably didn't) it's around a 5% difference.
Is that really a big deal?

Has anyone weighed their E55's? I want to compare with numbers in the brochure/manual. This might be interesting.

Ricky
Someone posted an E55 weight not to long ago as a response to one of my threads. I will take a look in the morning for it.

Thanks, I tried a search with the keywords of 'lbs' but it was too short.

Great, same math = -1% with the E55.

Great job BMW. But too soon to make a conclusion.
What could possibly account for the 5% error in the M5?

Optional equipment, wheels, tires, fluids, scale error, improper testing methods. Too many variables to consider in reality.

So uh, are most weight numbers kinda balony unless the cars are tested at the same time and what not?

If the weighing conditions are standardized (ie, the same) wrt fluid levels, etc, and the scales are properly calibrated, then the weight numbers should be valid. If someone want to pick nits, then theoretically, altitude is also factor, but at 5000 ft vs 0 ft, it's less than 0.5 %.

Do you know if there is some kind of stamp we can look for so we know? Like some companies state SAE NET hp so we can compare hp to hp, is there something like that for weight?
