A friend is getting the M5
Looking at the specs, it seems like both have 0-60 of 4.5 secs.
HP is relatively similar, 470 vs 500.
But the torque is very very different witht he E55 much greater.
Hate to ask this rather obvious question, but what does the added torque do?

At least, that's what owners of the M5 + E55 say. Krispy should chime in soon to give you detail.

Don't ever trust those.
www.mbusa.com says it's a 4.7second 0-60 on the SL600 right?
Didn't Car and Driver get 3.6second 0-60 on that same car?
Times and figures vary so much it's not even funny. If you want to compare times and numbers you'll have to test the cars at the same time in the same place under the same conditions.

Is E55 faster from 0-30 and then M5 catches up?
How can a question be myth and lies?

This discussion has gone on for at least the last month. My understanding at this point is that the MBZ is faster to 60, arguably faster in the quarter (BMW european version with launch control within .1 sec), and that the BMW screams like a demon in heat once it and its high rev motor hit 100 mph or so and 6000 rpm -- leaving the MBZ in the rearview mirror.
You cannot believe what the mags quote as real world figures as can't equivalate conditions, tires, drivers, and whether or not the provider supplied a 'ringer' tuned/adjusted car for the testing.....
Oh, and torque moves mass -- in simplest terms more torque = more accelerative ability = faster acceleration for a given mass (given traction, gearing, etc.)

That's what we did here in MD. Same day, same track, same driver.
The M5 had a higher trap speed, but was anywhere from .2-.4 slower to the stripe. So from a dig, it's all E55 up through the 1/4 mile. At 120+, the M5 may be able to catch up and pass, but you'd pretty much have to run them to the limiter if you run from a stop.
It's pretty easy to race the M5, I actually think it's trickier getting the E55 to leave without wheelspin.

One of the limited benefits of a lack of low-end torque. Kind of like launching the E in 2nd gear. (Accidently did that once and still ran a 12.8)
