Instead, it is usually speed inappropriate for conditions then prevailing and excessive variations between vehicles. For example, 80 can be perfectly safe on one day in good weather and light traffic while on the next 60 may be pushing it in heavy rain and even heavier traffic. The one size fits all speed limits we now have are usually set for octegenarians with glaucoma driving a 43 Buick in heavy snow. No wonder we all pretty much blow them off. I am not advocating Mario Andretti level limits, but how about something higher than the lowest common denominator BS we see now?
Think about it-- if on a given road like the one at issue virtually everyone "speeds" to the extent that storm troopers are needed at every lightpole and cameras even closer together then maybe the problem isn't with the drivers, but with an unresaonable law. Remember the 80% rule? Its what speed limits used to be set at and is calculated at what speed 80% of drivers would travel at in the absence of posted limits, the theory being that 10% will dodder about at 50 and 10% fly at 150, even in the rain. Seems that this road has artificially low limits and this needs ridiculous amounts of "enfarcement", which translates into "revenue machine"
And please--no "if we save one life its worth it". No, its not. Not every life can be saved--not unless we all stay home and never do a damed thing.
Well said. BRAVO.

Isn't it about time we stopped glorifying the special needs crowd and let ordinary people live their lives without undue or excess governmental oppression?
WOW...this should be FRAMED...

Absolutely PERFECT, ESPECIALLY the "wussification" of our society comment...could NOT have said it better myself.

I think you guys are leaving one MAJOR player out of the equation...

and that player is...(drum roll please...)

INSURANCE COMPANIES (like Geico).

These are one of the HUGE, PRIMARY factors behind these bullsh*t speed laws. Their "oh no, blood WILL flow red on the highway if the speed limit is raised to 65" propaganda crap was ENTIRELY a ploy to charge otherwise good motorists higher premiums for speeding than otherwise required. What a JOKE. They had AND HAVE financial results in mind, NOT roadway safety.

And the entire argument that 55 saves fuel IS bullsh*t as well. I get my BEST gas mileage doing anywhere around 80 in 6th gear. 55 is WORSE in ANY gear.

Stay among those drivers at your own risk. They are oblivious to traffic, weather, road conditions and pretty much everything else. Every wonder why pile ups occur?

I know some say this is harsh, but I fail to see why we need to accomodate them. Why should we all be forced to plod along simply because a relative few lack any semblance of interest in or ability at driving? Thats what the right lane is for. If a few get themselves killed due to their inattentiveness, then oh, well.....
Well said. If all of the speeders were isolated on their own freeway I doubt there would be any accidents due to the lack of reaction time that "experts" claim to be the cause of accidents (look at the Autobahn). Based on my driving experience, the only close calls I've had are from IDIOTS who drive slow in the wrong lanes, those that do not signal, or inattentive morons who are talking on the phone. If those idiots were kept off the freeway then there wouldn't be anything to "react" to.

I also use the 101 on a daily basis and I must agree with Grumpy, since the cameras have been installed the knuckleheads have slowed down to the 76mph which is allowed before getting a ticket. As someone who also rides motorcycles I am more than pleased to see this as prior to the cameras it was like a grand prix track with loads of fatalities by idiots who have no idea how to handle a vehicle at high speeds in an emergency also driving with one hand and the other on their cellphone. I've said my 2cts.

Drives Slowly
I was not planning on posting in this thread but since it has been revived, I have a couple of comments.

First, I agree with Grumpy. Nothing is more mindless, foolish, and dangerous than speeding on a heavily traveled road. I know, I know............... speed alone doesn't kill, but large variations in speed between cars in close proximity is a recipe for disaster. Grupy lashed out at a driver who he thought put innocent people in harms way.

Second, Grumpy is one of the best and most knowledgeable posters on this board, so cut him a little slack (I think the Satan reference was a bit much).
I would hate to lose such a great contributor to this forum.
