IC Pump? Does it really make a difference?

Can anyone with an I/C Pump upgrade tell me if it really made a difference at the track? I have a 2005 E55 with Renntech ECU, pulley and header upgrade. Thinking what next and have decided to consider an I/C pump upgrade. Does it really make a difference. Which one should I get? I have read that 2005s came with I/C pump upgrade, is this true? If so, I can't believe it is as good as an aftermarket upgrade.

I can't vouch for drag racing, but in freeway testing, the intake temp. recovery time was halved by going to a larger IC pump on my '04.

90 LPM is the "free flow" rating. It won't do that under load. I believe Johnson has a flow chart on their website. www.johnson-pumps.com There's no direct link, but go to Marine pumps, then pumps-by-application, then centrifugal, DC pumps. The Johnson pumps are f-ing BIG though and tough to find. I had to have a buddy of mine at West Marine special order the one I had. I'm testing something different now that's a little easier to fit and get ahold of. Once I know for sure that it's acceptable, I'll post a review.

I had a the pump changed, as well as the cooler in front of the radiator, when my car was mod. to Kleemann stage 4. Too me it was worth all the money. When the car still was stock, it did occur that the engine shut off the S/C in hot weather, due to raising air temp. after the I/C. When the car was run on dyno, after mods, the temp on air, after I/C was a steady 24 degree Cel. ( 75 F ) at full load, 654 hp. I dont expect any problems this summer, and remember, the I/C system has now too remove twice the amount of heat, at full load, as with stock power ( the heat produced by the S/C is going in square with the pressure ).

Did you get the Kleemann upgrade or the Evosport upgrade? Also do you think your car runs faster in the summer as a result? thanks

Kleemann uses that same Johnson pump and (AFAIK) so does Evosport. It's just a $250-ish marine pump you can get through West Marine or any of a bunch of other places. Johnson has a dealer list on their website. I think Kleemann get's nearly $600 for their basic "kit" which is that pump and a couple fittings and maybe a bracket. Evo adds a couple more fittings, some hose and another heat exchanger for around $3k.

It's an awesome mod. for a system that should have been stronger from the factory, but I know of at least one company (and possible a second as well) that are working on even bigger and better setups for less money with more readily available parts. I'm testing a new pump on my car as we speak and a new resevoir is being looked into as well as a degassing tank. The idea is to seperate the IC system completely from ANY engine coolant contact as well as increase the volume of the system. Measurements have been taken for a replacement exchanger that will completely replace the factory unit behind the bumper. Hopefully the new pump will be all that it's supposed to be and we can proceed with the second phase in a couple weeks.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to play the secret squirrel or anything. The one company I know for sure is working on a new system is HP Autowerks in Santa Barbara. AFAIK, the first one should be completed and in testing in a couple weeks. I don't know how long they'll want to evaluate it before they release it as a "finished" product. That's up to them, but even ASSuming everything goes perfectly the first time (how often does that happen??) those guys are kind of perfectionists so it may be a while.

Kleemann, and yes, i think the car will go faster. Since the whole I/C system has got mutch higher efficiency, the air forced into the engine is cooler, means, can burn more fuel.

In one word, YES. The I/C pump makes a heck of a difference.. That is if you can keep the darn thing running properly and it is working as it should.

If you are going to do pullies I would say you have no choice but to do the pump. Otherwise after 1 full run on the dyno you will heat soak the motor and will see approx 20 - 30hp drop.

Thanks! Right now I have a Renntech ECU, pulley, and headers upgrade. Based on your comments, I probably am not experiencing the true potential of these upgrades, particularly at the top end. I have taken the car to the track a number of times and have been dissapointed by my 1/4 mile times and the mph. Maybe the motor is heat soaked by the time I reached 1/4 mile mark.

Heat in I/C is an issue, no doubt about that, BUT.........

Dont forget the cams, they add tremendus power, if choosen right. Stock AMG cams are designed to deliver power in the range of 2800 to 4000 Rpm. When doing 1/4 mile, you need more top end power. Kleemann Cams are designed to give power in the range of 3000 to 5800 Rpm. From experience i can tell, that when they rearly kick in at 4500 Rpm, it is a blast, and they continue to deliver tremendus power until 6300 Rpm.

You have got all the right stuff, just ad the cams and you will love it.

Tremendous power? I am not sure what you consider tremendous, but, the Kleemann cams are only good for 15hp from what I recall. I believe the main reason there isn't a bigger increase in power with a "hotter" cam is because the heads are flow limited.

IMHO I don't think it is worthwhile to spend the $4,400 on the cams for the 15 - 20hp they provide. That money is better spent in other areas.. But that's just me.

I was looking into the SLR cams because I could get them at a VERY GOOD price so I was willing to experiment. The only problem was no one was able to guarantee 100% that they would work in the E55 so I didnt purchase them.. That experiment is still on the table but I need to get some more details.

The real power to be unlocked in these motors is to open up the heads and get to more radical cam profiles.

Do you have full Kleemann exhaust system (Cats, down pipes, middle mufflers) or just header and primary cats removed ???

MKB tunes SLR engines to 730HP...So 55K engine does have a potential, but the questions how different are these blocks...

SLCHARGER - You seem to have had higher than avg stock power to start with so the question is.... how did you break in your car?????

Break in is an issue, but in my case the 520 stock Hp is explained by the following.

My SL is one of the early models, and the early models had more power, stock, from AMG. The power was taken back to 476Hp, when the SL600 was launched. I think, because MB didnt want to have equal numbers, the V12 had to be more powerfull than the V8.

Oh yeah.. There's progress alright...

I've been trying to buy a set of head castings.. I called up my parts guy and inquired about a set of stock AMG head castings for the W211... The quote... $4,100 PER SIDE!! Now keep in mind these are BARE heads. I don't feel too enthusiastic about plopping down $8,200 for a set of heads to experiment with so now I am looking for a used set. Know anyone that can locate a set for me?

I've got a guy locally here that builds race motors that will create a CNC program to port the heads. The first experiment is to open up the exhaust ports, enlarge the header openings and see what she does on the dyno.

SL - not withstanding your car being one of the earlier ones, you state 'break-in is an issue'. How did you break it in???? : )
