Figured what the hell, and gave it a shot per the instructions someone posted. I get her out and punch it from a start and it feels weird....a bit unstable. I am like great, I broke something, then I realize it is pulling like a friggin freight train and my a$$ is wiggling. I can't wait til the ECU sets me up this way....maybe better, that would smoke.
Anyway proceeded to do some launches and I can really tell a difference in shifts. Someone said it best....feels like the car had a tune up or something.
I COMMAND all of you to try this (well if you are not happy with your current setup). I just know now my car set me up wimpy due to long highway miles after driving back from Klee. Enjoy!!!
1. Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.
2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.
3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.

Does this still work if your TCU has been tuned?
I have a permanent fault showing ever since my TCU tune upgrade and this is normal due to the software modification.
I have not tried the reset using STAR but normally if you have a permanent fault, you can not communicate to the control module.

+1 no effect on any tuning changes you have made. Basically, most of us find normal driving results in low RPM shifts and soft shifts related to driving in traffic at lower speeds. The adaptive nature of the transmission adjusts to this type of driving that most of us do 90% of the time. The reset clears this soft pattern. If you reset and drive hard, running close to red line shifts, the adaptive system will adjust to the more aggressive driving style.
When I plan on a spirited drive, like maybe a nice weekend drive on twisty roads and quick launches, I always do the Sneaky reset before my drive.
Just wanted to add that more than once, I did the sneaky reset, then mashed the throttle on the freeway at maybe 50 MPH only to be greeted by a flashing yellow triangle immediately followed by the strong desire to look in the rear view mirror thinking I had just been rear-ended by a semi and then realizing it was just the combination of the sneaky reset and the massive torque of a modded 55k.

Adaptation is a dynamic process and works while driving. If you drive like a grandpa you'll get the sluggish shifting. If you drive like Michael Schumacher you will get the quick shifts. If you first drive like a grandpa then decide to floor it a few times it will adapt to this and vice versa. To clear this whole mess you do this reset and decide grandpa or Schumacher behavior.
And last but not least this adaptation routine doesn't care about your tuning.

I will, I did before the TCU tune, just keep forgetting every time I get in the car.
Since the TCU tune, the gear changes have been harsher under light acceleration. Actually seems to be harder when in comfort mode than sport?

thanks just did the reset earlier today, yes changes are much smoother, even from cold.
Also I couple of months ago when I was driving at the track...........
gearbox oil came out of the dip stick tube in between the cap. Oil covered the underneath of the car and exhaust, the smoke was very bad at the time. Had been driving between 50-150mph for 20mins. U think I boiled the oil or had to much to start with, why did it come out through the dipstick and not the breather.
I measured it and its ok, did not top up. Just happened once only.

Huge! Just picked up an 06 E55 with 51K miles on it. Was thinking about adaptive transmissions thinking the car was behaving in a manner like it was expecting a different input. Going to do this tonight!

Pretty much as the title suggests.
Feels as though the car has relearnt where the pedal is. I wasn't sure if an E55 was just doughy at low throttles or what, but just gave this a shot on the way home from the supermarket and instant throttle response now.
Nice little free-be!

Every third post or so says it does not kill your custom tuner settings bc it doesn't affect the ECU. It's a TCU adaptation reset. Not sure why every single individual needs his personal answer to the same f'ed question. Just saying
