Holy Crap! Mt tests the 997turbo @ 3.2 0-60!

Mt in the June issue tests the new 997 turbo 0-60 = 3.2 and the 1/4 mile at 11.4!!! That's the tiptronic. My God that is FAST.

And that was with that 10 second extra boost feature engaged. During those few seconds, the car makes 500 lb-ft at the flywheel. The Turbo also weighs in around 3200 lbs. Fast? Yeah.

Curb weight is 3495 lbs, and the 'overboost' doesn't give you any extra HP, but gives you 45 ft-lb extra torque between 2000-4000 rpm. Still a phenomenal car.

Err, uhh, ahh, think about that statement for a few seconds. Well, ok, let's at least think about it for a split second at least. HP = (torque)(RPM)/5252 If it gives you 45 lb-ft of extra torque, it is also giving you extra low end hp too!

yeah... Europe, so that would be diesels ;)
That would equal the performance of the Ruf RT12, which has 650hp...
In that way, it'd also be faster than the CGT in 0-60...

I'm skeptic, but it is possible

The new 911 Turbo's Tiptronic is actually (for the first time) faster than the manual, due to the new VTG (variable-turbine geometry) technology plus gearing and setup. It must suck to be pressured to by that car in Automatic!

E55 AMG/ 911 GT2/ 911 GT3
Due to the VTG turbo technology and overboost, the new 997TT's will be very, very quick from a standstill or even initially from a roll on since the turbos will exhibit virtually no lag.

Pointless to compare the E55 versus the higher end Porsches, as in some of the other threads. Porsches are purposefully built for amazing performance and reliability under even strenuous track conditions. Mercedes are built for comfort and high speed cruising. My GT2 with very little modification can destroy even an SLR all day long, especially at the track. Mercedes, with the exception of the McLaren F1 race cars, are not really meant for hardcore track activity. The sooner we realize this more it becomes obvious that ideally, you own different cars for different purposes. There is no one perfect car for everything. If there was, we'd all probably buy it.

The crazy thing about those times were that they were done with snow tires driven on snow and ice. Some traction had to be lost. Porsche sure knows how to put hp to the ground. Amazing.

You're right. A lot of Porsche buyers are wondering about that. Seems that a lot of them will be willing to give up the couple of tenths and stick with the um, stick. I would also get the stick. Maybe if they had a Ferrari type gear box, that would be something to think about.

I was referring to the "500 HP at the crank" statement - the overboost doesn't increase the maximum HP of the engine, it's still 480 HP.

It is a guarantee that alot of tuners will be able to extend the timing of the overboost mode, making the max HP higher than 480 and maybe closer to 600

Yep, I know. I was just calling attention to the fact that too many people look at peak hp and not average hp. That extra low end torque really helps acceleration.

Acceleration times seem outstanding at first glance, however the trap speed of barely 120mph in a 1/4 mile shows that much of it is achieved with trick gearing and that at higher speeds the car will run out of steam pretty quick.

Mash and go to 60 in 3.2........thats f'in crazy. I live in Cali so I am not so worried about trap speeds in the quarter- I cant even drive a tenth of mile without some slow driver killing my speed buzz.

In this age it is just good but not outstanding for a supercar 997TT claims to be.

I wonder if the trap times are low because of the "10 second extra boost" that occurs . After 10 seconds, the boost is reduced?? Or could have been the snow tires, snow and ice?? Can't wait to see the times at the track. Vic55 is right now a days there is so much traffic that you usually can only get up to 60-100 mph. I will take that 0-60 in the snow!

The price is not "supercar" however...the Carrera GT will take care of the supercar price and supercar performance, but the 997 TT is indeed a very, very fast and a very useable everyday rocket. I can't wait to see the turbo"S" versions #'s in a couple of years not to mention when Porsche's SMG type gearbox hits next year and replaces the old style tiptronic.
