Airflow Improvement?

I was looking at the air intake system and noticed a flap on both sides in the front of the stock ram air induction system on our cars. Do you think that opening this flap in the front does anything for increased airflow?

Mine have been open since I did Stage I with Evosport, cant really tell if they make a difference since I had my underdrive and overdrive pulleys done at the same time.

Shucks... I'm not the genius I thought I was for discovering this mod?!?!?! LOL just kidding.

Just a guess, but it almost looks like MB did this to help detune the E55 engine over the SL55 engine. Does anyone know if the SL55's has this flap?

I had cut mine off within the first few weeks of ownership. I would think that it has to help. It can't hurt.

I would imagine it's also there for extreme wet/rainy conditions. For normal weather, it has to help to remove these w/o danger of water. The more "pressure" you can get to the air filters, the easier the S/Charger is going to make max boost!
Don't mis-understand....I'm not saying you're now going to do a 11 flat 1/4 mi., but I would not be surprised that it helps create a slight increase in Hp at high terminal velocity!

SL 65 AMG and E63s AMG
I believe that the flap is there to prevent water from entering the intake while running in the rain. There have been several threads in the past couple of years regarding this mod. You might do a search.

It hardly rains in Vegas... guess I need not worry.

Here's one more thread to add to the "several" over the past couple years.

I cut those things off so long ago that I forgot I even did it!!!! Cut those *******s off. They do absolutely nothing as far as protection (no elephants are flying in there any time soon) and it probably doesn't do much cutting them off either but hey, you might as well. Some say it produces more of a ram effect at speed, but its all subjective, I suppose. I say go for it, more air is always better.

I too cut them off so long ago I forgot about them. The rain protection idea might hold water (pun intended) but really the air is carryin the moistue anway (at speed) - it could only help if some how a real splash of water as a whole tried to enter. And this only occurs at car washes and large puddles...you have to drive carefully anyway in any standing water (hydor-lock possiblities). and car washes could go over the flap anyway...
Cut 'em off...
