Advice Needed re. Cracked Taillight -- I didn't do it!!!
I have had my e55 wagon since Labor Day 2005. Never been in an accident, never scuffed it up, never let anyone else drive it....
So, I was at the gas station the other day having a coronary at the pump, when I looked at the taillights and noticed some "crystalline"-like cracking on the passenger-side part of the red light lens that's mounted on the tailgate. I've got a feeling that this has been there all along since I bought the car; there's no other marks on the paint or anywhere near the lens, and the lens itself isn't cracked anywhere else -- only around the edges on two sides. Moreover, I'm the only one who drives the car, and I wash it infrequently enough that I'd notice if something came into contact with the tailgate (yeah, I'm a slob with the car-cleanliness, but it's safer to park out at the clubs, etc. late at night that way, as opposed to being clean and gleaming where it'd be a target for vandals).
I want to go to the dealer and have this fixed, but I wonder whether you guys can help with any arguments I can make to have the dealer/MBUSA pay the cost of the part. It's undoubtedly going to cost a fortune, like everything on these cars does, but since I didn't do this, how can I get MB to cover the cost?
Your (serious) suggestions are most welcome.
