Drove the M5 *Video*

Visited my boy at his new house today and he let me drive his new M5. I personally think it's a very fun car to drive, kicks like Bruce Lee after 3rd gear (scary as hell on the freeway). For a stock exhaust it sounds very good, sound system is way better than the Harmon Kardon, and the paddle shift design feels better than the button one, interior design is ok. Handling is very solid for a 4 door sedan. SMG is very jerky, maybe I'm not used to shifting it but my head hits against the headrest everytime changing in gear. First try we set it at P400 (400HP), didn't get me erect. Second attempt, full blown setting S6 (hidden mode) and the car chirps like a ***** 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Torque is not as strong as the 55, so at a stop light race the E55 would have the advantage. Once the M5 get pass 3rd gear, it keeps going and going. Next visit I will test out my car with his, what a blast driving the M as you can see in the video...Cheers!

Good stuff there Jay. Looked like some serious fun. It's a shame you have to go through all that BS with the settings to unleash the full potential of the car.

His home theater set up blew Imax away so we spent most of our time in there watching Lord of the Rings and playing XBox Live. It's on next time

is the single push of a tiny little thumb button on the steering wheel really that difficult?

That car sounds really good! Nice ride your son has!!

The chirping between shifts is really neat to hear! That is one thing that shocks me about the E55.. So much torque, but, no chirps..

Jay, great video and I can see why many M5 owners love their cars just as we love ours.

Hey, that was your E55 in the driveway I assume and if so, what a happened to the rims (HRE)?

Paint chipped off, so getting them coated. HAHA, I'm gld he didn't race the E55. His rear tires are bald as can be and you guys would end up thinking the M5 was faster. Bring your bro down here and let me get a hold of him.

Love the chirps, by the way!!

You have to set up the whole thing thru iDrive before you just push 1 button for max performance in the M5. That is inconvenient and over complicated not difficult.
E55 = Boot it & go.

Exactly Vic, our cars should be chirping with the tremendous torque. He is my good friend, I'm too young to make babies

My black centers peeled so bad that I cannot use a Sharpie anymore. HRE offered to powdercoat and polished everything to be spanking new again. All you guys with HRE black centers, becareful because they will peel eventually even with proper care unless it's powdercoated. HRE has great customer service : )

if you can use an ipod, you can use idrive. besides, the set up only has to be done once and that's it. i doubt you could find an m5 owner that hasn't figured out how to set up the m button within the first day of ownership.

those cars are badass and to think it's not or think it's lacking because of the m button is rather silly.

chromikey, you are missing my point entirely. I am a big fan of BMW, I have owned a M3 with the SMG and loved it. All I was saying is that the M5 is not as simple as planting your foot like the E55. I know it's a push of a button and a monkey can do it. It's setting it up that makes it a little "complicated". Have you seen the Top Gear episode where Jeremy Clarkson goes through the process of setting the car up through iDrive? I can appreciate how he got a little frustrated as did my salesman showing me before a test drive, he hates iDrive and he sells the thing every day. I'm not tyring to bash and make a big deal about the freakin thing, I happen to like the M5 alot and I certainly don't find it "lacking" because of the M button. I'd probably be driving one if it was available last August when chose the E55. If that M5 video doesn't impress everyone there's a serious problem. Lighten up a little bro, it's all good.

i'm not upset here so there's nothing for me to lighten up about and i'm not missing the point, setting up the m button one time is insignificant...that's the point. yes, i saw the top gear "skit" and it was very funny but i hope you're not trying to imply that it was more than that...a humerous skit. and yes, idrive can be frustrating even for salesmen...especially when bmw keeps changing how it operates between vehicles. i'm not a fan of idrive at all and since you've also driven the m5, you can certainly agree that idrive really has almost nothing to do with the m button after day 1.

In Top Gear magazine they refer to iDrive as "iDistract, then iCrash".

I was rolling for days about it.

Its not really as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Yeah a little cumbersome, but once you get used to it, its not so bad. Just don't try and program the NAV while you're moving.

Setting up the M button is easy enough, but I've gotten to the point now where I just always drive in S6/TC off/***** to the wall.

Nice vid, thanks for sharing. The E55, M5 & now the E63 are three great beasts. I think that the owner of ANY of these incredible machines should be a very happy person & consider themselves very lucky to own one! They're all excellent automobile's & anyone who says otherwise about any of them is being ignorant.

Exactly, well said. We're all fortunate to drive what we drive.

The M button issue, it's NOT difficult at all, you set it once and it's done til you change the settings.
