Wrapped My Intakes Today...

I think they turned out pretty good... I hope it will keep the heat off the intakes.

Here is what I used, The only thing I had to do was build up the intake where it wasn't round so it would lay right.

Nice job with the wrap , but it makes me think if such a simple and inexpensive mod did anything worthwhile wouldn't AMG/MB be doing it?

Yeah, but usually effects are minimal.

How come you're using those wraps on the intake and not on the manifolds/headers? Is there a reason you did that? I would think the wraps would be more effective on the manifold/headers than just the intakes?

They were just a little slow to catch on that's all.. The new model cars all come with a black slip-on (sock style) heat shield that cover the intake tubes.

Do the newer 63 cars have these sleeves? Do you have any pics of the newer tube covers?
I've seen some newer MB intake tubes that had a patterned impression in the plastic that looked like a sleeve but it was faux.
Thanks

Thanks for the pic, that's what I saw at the dealership and they were just a pattern imprinted in the plastic so I thought...maybe I didn't look close enough?

Victor would it help at all...

I noticed when racing the car...btw run if you put heater on, it takes out the heat from motor and temp drop significantly...

Some people say it doesnt help.. I say it does.. Bottom line is that it doesnt hurt and using the header wrap is a very easy way to it. You can get the tubes nice and tight with no air gaps.

I say wrap the tubes, insulate and wrap the airboxes, add the Evosport Phenolic intake manifold spacers, put heat insulation tubes around the spark plug boots and you are all set!

That's everything that I did so far on the wrapping side.

Time to bring back an old thread! Has anyone actually wrapped the headers?

i don't know of anyone who wrapped the exhaust manifold or headers, but isn't that what the ceramic coating is for or is that simply anti corrosion?

Intake wrap

I did the intake wrap on mine when i first got the car and it made a noticable difference. At that time one of the guys on this board wrapped the intake tubes and the airboxes and reported a tenth of a second drop on his quarter mile. It is all about the airboxes though. Wrapping the tubes helps, but try picking up some self adheasive heat reflective wrap. Take off the airbox and cut and stick . It will make a noticable difference.

i would rather go with this route... ive heard of some 600hp mr2s wrapping their intake piping with exhaust wrap and the hot side intake piping was heatsoaking the intercooler because the piping wasnt letting any bit of heat dissipate. the exhaust wrap is used to keep the exhaust heat from radiating out... just my 2 cents.

you can search other threads for my comments but do NOT wrap exhaust parts unless you're willing to take the chance of destroying them.

Got it, appreciate you thoughts. i don't know the configuration of the MR2 intake piping, but on the e55 the air box sit directly above the exhaust manifold and any reflective material used help to rid of heat on the intake and not the other way around. also, doing this wrap on these cars works. The throttle on my car is more crisp and much more consistent than before the wrap. I havn't confirmed the tenth of a second drop in 1/4 mile posted by another member, but i wouldn't dought it.

I think that it would be more beneficial for a N/A engine rather than a charged one. I think that both would benefit, but mmore so for the E63 N/A.
Anything to make the air cooler....!!

I stand corrected........."And for every 10-degree decrease in air intake temp, expect horsepower gains of 2% with turbo chargers and 1% with carburetors. ........From Jegs racing catalog...

I would assume that fuel injection and carbs should show the same results!

They quoted this on header wrap, but I think that intake air would be the same!
