Project SLR Cams in E55 is now underway!!!!
Sometimes in your life, you just gotta go for it. After researching to the best of my ability and consulting everyone I could, I came up to the famous "Edge Of The Cliff". The point where noone really knows what will happen. You gather all the info you can, make an educated guess and step over the edge.
My dealer was able to locate the last 2 SLR cams in the US and snagged them under the condition of "No Take Backs". Cams ran 2200$ (1100$ per) and we decided to do this right and install the SLR Cam Followers just as a safety precaution. This dealer has got to be one of the coolest in the US. They put their SLR mechanic on this install and he is just as interested to see if this works.
Bottom line, we really don't know if this will work or not so do not run out and order SLR cams until you hear from me!!!! Last update I had at 10:20am my time is that he said things are looking good, but still no guarantees.
(If you do a search on the forum you will find lots of "He said it won't work", or "They said it won't work." , but noone has really tried. )
We really won't know what type of performace gains we are looking at until she goes up on the dyno. First things first.....these gotta fit.....and work.
We always wanted to know if SLR cams would fit.......now we'll know.

Go Jim Go!!!
I just wish someone would open their mouth and spit out the specs for these cams so I can tell how they compare to the specs I got on my custom set.
Someone has to know the SLR cam specs???

Cool. You need to do some research on idle strategy if you're gonna add those big cams successfully, and have your car run correctly. If it doesn't work, you can make these out of them...

Congratulations on your purchase. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Was there any other bits required for the change over?
Are you increasing air induction?
Any chance of documenting the procedure with photos?
I know there is enough on your plate at the moment... but I'm sure we all would really really appreciate the above request.
Many Thanks

Sorry to **** you again mate...
But what's the chance of running some questions from us to the SLR mechanic who will assist you in the bump stick transplant ?
Obviously this guy would have extensive knowledge on the engine... ?
Thanks again!

Jim, you are one sick pup.
Anyone that is willing to do an experiment on their $90,000+ MB for the edification of the class is okay in my book.
I wonder if the SLR mechanic was thinking "WTF, It's not my car. If it works.....cool, I'm a great mechanic. If it goes BOOM!! Oh well, I just secured my next two weeks of work on an engine rebuild. Either way.................... I get paid.

20+ to list......
Did you also purchased the upgraded valvetrain from the SLR? Is it needed? Cams are so aggressive that stock valvetrain might not be able to handle them.
