Just drove an E 63 today........
I went to my dealer for a little service and lo and behold a brand new E63 in Obsidian was sitting in the middle of the showroom.
Looks........better than my 05 E55. The wheels are really nice, the trunk lip works, the 6.3 badge on the side is well done, the front end is improved. The only thing i like better on the 55 is the taillights.
The interior is pretty similar....the gauges are different, the alacantra headliner is black instead of grey (the black is better IMO), the steering wheel is beefier, and the seats are more comfy.
At idle, sounds stronger than the 55.
Now for the test drive.
My quick impressions:
E63 is smoother, quieter, and feels more docile when driving slowly through the parking lot. At acceleration you know how the 55 will lag a little before kicking in? The E63 takes off in a more linear, controlled manner. While I agree that the 55 "feels" like it has more low end punch, my impression was that I could not say that the 55 was definitely quicker from a roll, but on two runs up to 125 mph the 63 feels stronger and pulled quicker from 70-80 mph to 120mph.
Didnt push the handling or brakes to give a good opinion.
The question then became.....trade the 55 for the 63?
Dealer initially offered 54k for my 55 with 3k mi. I said no way...that I would expect at least 60k. Sticker on the well optioned 63 was 93k.
Over two years, which is the usual time I keep my cars, will the the depreciation of the 07 63 and the 05 55 be the same dollar amount such that getting the 63 would be a wash financially?
Decisions, decisions. Any input from board members would be appreciated.

If you sell it, do it privately for 63-65k. I don't understand anyones desire to sell a E55 for a E63?!?!? Not to mention taking a big loss doing it.

When comparing a brand new car to a two year old car I would hope the new one feels smoother...even if it only has a few thousand miles since it probably sits alot.
I also don't remember my 06 E55 having any lag before kicking in

I to like the looks of the 63 better but think I am going to hold on to my 55 for at least another year. If you are selling the 55 let me know I have a buyer.

EagleEye: I do not recall anytime over the three years that I owned my 03' W211 E55 that it ever lagged. Nor was it rough through a parking lot. I now have owned 2 E55's and neither has been rough at low speed. Now maybe yours did once in a while but I do not recall that effect ever. I personally feel you should stick with the E55 vs. the E63 but there are diverse opinions here. But the one constant that seems to be overwhelming is that a high % of previous E55 owners have opted to keep their 55's and forgo the E63. But to each his own. I got a 2nd W211 E55 after pondering that very same decision and am very glad I did!!! Good luck on which ever way you decide

Agreed. My E55 does not lag at all. In fact, it pulls from idle on and is not easy to take off smoothly because it pulls so hard right from the start.

Hmm, this is wierd. You feel the E63 is faster than your E55, but it sounds like something is wrong with your E55 that you accepted as normal. I've NEVER felt any kind of lag on my E55.

I'm not sure if lag is the proper term. It is more like when you depress the accelerator the car takes some time to downshift before it throws you back in the seat..........the 63 feels more linear with the throttle. I guess it is the 7 speed tranny.
I t appears from reading Derek's thread from today that I will hold off until the "dust settles".

eagleeye...
I think you should sell your E55 to me for $60K! I know, it's hard for me to accept this "slower" and older car of yours but it wouldn't be fair for the E63 to be teasing you like that. Besides, your E55 saw how you looked at that E63 and if you feel you had lag then...wait 'till ya take her out next time! Instead, I'll give the ole gal a good home! The E55 that is!
All kidding aside...if you do sell, let me know! Here I was hoping most of the E55 owners would be jumping ship to the E63 but now this forum seems to be divided, hence delaying my deal on an E55! There are still plenty of deals to be had so I'm still looking!
Thanks for the write up on your experience with the E63! I'm still interested to see official times of this new beast. Maybe this newer tranny with 7-gears simply is faster but has a better, softer way of showing it. That's the new German secret. Seems to be with the M5.

I just bought a used 03 E55 for 53.5 with onl 15k... I would of paid 60 easily for yours.
The only reason I bought the 03, low miles, Silver color, and extended warranty up to 2010. The car is a CPO purchased this year in 4/06. Therefore it has seen very little use.
Anyhow.. trade in is murder. I can't believe an 05 car is marked that low by a dealer.
Sell it private party you should get mid 60's easily. 04's are now in the high 50's and 03's in the low 50's

I totally understand what eagleeye is talking about when he is talking about a lag. If you are pulling from a stop light there is no lag. But lets say you are in a parking lot or you are on a roll, when you press the pedal, there is a lag before the power kicks in. Sure, I know its the tranny downshifting, but never the less, there is a lag.
I test drove the SL65 AMG, and the lag is even longer in that car.
I have had my E55 for 41K miles, so I do know what I feel in my car.
Still the best 4-door I have ever driven and am thinking about going to a CLS63. Of course, I would need to test drive it first to make my own comparison.

You don't think MB knows that the 63 is a dog? Why then didn't they install it into the flagship SL AMG? They do know it. Hope no one buys the 63 and MB gets back on track.

The 65 is a turbocharged vehicle where turbo lag is a normal characteristic vs. a supercharged engine where lag is not.

I just bought a 2005 E55 yesterday with 14500 miles on it for $62500. The car is immaculate and I couldn't be happier at this point. It stickered for $92800 and was only in service for 15 months. No damage history of any kind.
I had to drive 400 miles to pick it up and trade my Audi S4(850 miles total). The drive back was much nicer. I just can't see why anyone would take over a $30K hit to trade for an E63. Some people just have too much money.

I saw a CLK63 drive by me today in the city so I told myself I had to go to the showroom and see if they had an E on the floor. Sure enough they did and when the saleswoman approached me (I was practically laying on my back looking at the undercarriage/exhaust system) she likely concluded that I was interested. She mentioned that they had just got an obsidian black one in today in their lot and I could drive it if I wanted. I almost fainted.
Derek, you MUST have gotten a lemon. Now I admit that I still think my 55 has power loss issues from the latest update, but this thing felt quick. As you said, I couldn't really feel as much low-end power as the 55 but the 63 really just takes off. Its almost as if it has just enough power to put to the ground without slipping. I couldn't even get past 4th before I was doing 80mph and had to slow down. Where the 55 just rockets you forward and then lags between shifts, slows from heatsoak, etc. the 63 just does not stop going.
Brakes were DEFINITELY a huge improvement. They feel crisp and firm. Although it takes a while to get used to them (they're like BMW brakes now, really touchy) they feel alot more secure than the SBC. Steering also feels much tighter and responsive. All around, it feels like the car intervenes alot less between the driver and the road.
Right after I returned the car I quickly left and jumped in mine and drove the same route doing the same pulls. I wasn't impressed. Based on what I've been reading on these forums I thought I would get back in my car and drive off into the sunset happy with the 55. Now, dont get me wrong, I LOVE my car and wouldn't trade it for an Enzo...but I might for a 63.
The car felt much more pure than the 55 because of the N/A engine. Linear accel. was smooth, quick and never-ending. The power was also very obvious. IMO it is a great car and besides the non-mod-friendly setup, I'd say its an ideal car to have.

Ok, I was just about to create a post with the exact heading and I have to say, you said almost exactly what I was about to.
