Dyno'd my beast

Hey everyone,

I finally got to dyno my beast. It is a baseline dyno as I plan on gettin K1 done very soon. FOr all you guys who can read these things let me know if this is good or bad. And if you could comment on making my car better via "air to fuel" ratio that would be great...

Facts

Location = Boston = Sea level
2004 E55
42k miles on the odo
Temperature - 82 degrees F

We took 5 runs. The last run is the run that i am posting as it is the only run that we got without the car shifting. I had it in dyno mode but when we were shifting up to 4th gear in M mode, we were not shifting it with the steering wheel paddles, but with the shifter and this causes the car to down shift then upshift. On our 5th run, we figured that you had to use the paddle shifters in order for it to stay in 4th...... so this is the 5th run.... I think if we had gotten it with in the 1st or 2nd run, we could have yeilded better numbers.....

The sensor for the A/F ratio was placed right after the Cat on the right side.

Max Power - 370.57
Max Torque - 409.95

Im no pro but it seems low,car may have been heat soaked or the run wasnt done correctly. Not sure, somebody will chime in here soon though.Hopefully with better info for you. Those numbers were uncorrected too?

You're half way there. Now you gotta take it to the track for the whole picture. Go get'em!

I think if you take into effect 20% drive train loss, your at about 460 max power and 510 max torque so i am a little bit off but not too much. Again I think heat soak played a role in the lower numbers but again I just wanted to get a baseline dyno before K1 is installed.

Cheers

i think the average drive line loss is accepted at about 17% which should place these cars between 400-410 on a dynojet dyno (based on the speculation that these cars really have 493hp at the crank) and what most e55's are (were) making.

i don't know what you would get after correction factors are applied but i'm not sure it would be 30-40hp.

it does look similar to what many of the recalled cars are now making.

20% is high.Car was too hot too get ideal numbers. Some cars have seen as low as 10% loss, but most are between 13-18 I would guess.Mine put down 402hp and 485tq. Too bad you could'nt do another before it gets the K1 mod, just too be sure.

My car (2005 CLS55, manufactured 12/05) got about 380hp on a Dyno Dynomatics before the Renntech mods. This is with fairly poor AZ summer premium fuel, which likely resulted in pulled timing, and high temperatures. Considering those conditions and expected drivetrain loss, crank power could be up at the spec of 469hp but certainly no more.

The ECU reflash and secondary air injector relay replacement campaign did not apply to my VIN, in other words the car already had the new ECU software with the load limited. Has your 2004 E55 had the re-flash done ?

My instinct is that the 55K engines had basically the same 493hp as the CL/S/SL cars before they put the load limiter in the ECU. With the new software they may have dropped the HP to the factory spec. At the same time they give the SL a power boost with a larger TB, giving the SL a real performance advantage over the CL/S/SL cars. Also they prevent the 63 cars from being outrun by the 55K.

Good thing is that the potential is still there with tuner software a la Kleemann, Renntech, etc. Bad thing is the tuner software is expensive. Despite my stock car being an underachiever, particularly compared to some of the older E55's around here, after the mods it did deliver the promised performance (574hp / 626tq). And my post-mod dyno may have been on the low side, as the car may not have had time to adjust to the new ECU software and also the better fuel, specifically a quarter tank of 100 octane added to the AZ summer 91 premium.

I think I might just go back and get another dyno done before I send out my ECU to kleeman on tuesday. So we all agree that the first run would be the best run as heat soak theory will not apply? Ill call my dyno guy and see if he could do it on monday .

Yes my car had the ECU reflash.

Ask them to start the pull earlier, say around 2500 RPM. The plot in this thread starts about 4000 RPM. Your torque could be higher. Also, plot RPM on the x-axis, not speed.

Yes my car had the ECU reflash.
Take the car back, pull it in and make a pull.Let it sit with the fans blowing on it for 10-20 minutes and then do another pull,if possible let it sit again and do another. That should be enough to get a good base line. When you bring the car back after the mods are done follow the exact same routine, what ever it was for the base line day.Thats the best way to get comparison results.

Also look to see what Grumpy666 had to say about rpm etc. in this thread.4th gear in M mode using the paddle shifters to shift, bring the car up smoothly, start the pull between 2300-2500rpm.thats what worked for my car.
