E55 AMG
I think HIM is one of the last E55's to roll off the production line.....perhaps it is the called the signature series to sign off (terminate) production of the beast????
...and what you get is one hell of a car........E63 everything....except the heart is of the BEAST!!!!
.....But I am just guessing!!

If that is the case, then is it EVRYTHING E63 except the motor / tranny? I'll guess on the tranny, since even a signature series 7g couldn't take the E55 power.
I'm more wondering about SBC, rotors, steering, etc. Even the interior. If this is truly the last E55, the owner may want to consider keeping it shiny and new. We may be ending an era of raw MBs and entering one where the AMG brand is more diluted.

As for AMG making the motor from scratch, I am not impressed. Neither by the motor nor by AMG's design. There is nothing new or inovative. It is a simple marketing tactic. Who do you think made the E55 engines? You saying that AMG simply added an SC?

I'm not saying that i do not like it or that it makes the brand weaker, because i do not. I am simply saying that the E55 may be the last in a line of "exclusive" MBs. I think you will see the price point between a top end of a given line and the AMG version being MUCH closer than the past. Not long ago, a loaded E500 ran about $60K while a loaded E55 was at $95K. That is a 50% jump from TOP END to AMG. Clearly it takes a "leap" to decide between the two. I never got the AMG to be exclusive, so I don't care. But, I do miss the days when an AMG meant something rather than being a simple package (ala R63) added to any body.

From a design point of view the M113 is a dead blow hammer and the 63 is a sword. Both hurt when you be wacked with them but the 63 does it with far more grace and style.
As for the E55 being the last real exclusive AMG I disgree again. AMG's have been ho hum items since the late 1990's. The last really nice AMG was also the first... the C36. It was a low volume car with real upgrades all around. You dont see any amg these days with unique control arms, bushings, subframe upgrades etc. The current amg's share all suspension parts with the OEM car and just use different shock and springs rates and stiffer roll bars.
It is fact that the AMG cars are all money makers. In 1999 I was told that an E55 cost only 10k more to make than say an E430 but they charged what 20k more for the upgrade? I think AMG cars are the SUV's of the MB world.... huge money makers.

Jangy you must agree that the M113 motor is a low tech motor on the level of say an old school pushrod V8. Its big on power but low on tech. The new AMG engine uses tapets, variable valve timing on intake and exhaust valves and other items not even seen on the old motor. Heck the old M119 had more technology than the M113.

As for calling the E55 the last of the "good" old ones, I agree with you on most points, but never forget that drivetrain. the 55K setup is a monster on ANY chasis. I just don't think we will be seeing a car from MB anytime soon that has the character that the E55 does. Docile in every way but 1. Does it need suspension work? You know I think so and am on it. Bilstein should have some shocks ready for trial very soon...
