Composite Rotors

Anyone know anything about these:

http://www.benmaxx.com/solutions.asp?pa=brake_rotor

I never thought of an all aluminum rotor with steel inserts for wear. Sounds interesting.

Do they actually use these on automobiles or braking systems for machinery?
It sounds like a excellent idea if they actually work. What about extreme braking temps?

They are for all braking applications (cars, trucks, etc.). I just got turned onto them, so I will see where it goes. They are basicall backed by Alcan, so they want to use aluminum. Also, it seems that they are doing some research, etc. into alloy properties. i just thought it was cutting edge and may be worth looking into since I am off to make my own rotors anyway.

still curious if we can use the rotors for the 63 on the 55. drilled, slotted and composite. i think they are the same diameter, but not sure if we will be able to see if the offset is the same without someone buying them and trying them out.

While we planned weight checks, I do not think we have access to the Evo ones. I will be happy to publish our numbers if someone wants to divulge EVO stats? I am definitely on the EVO black list and the other member i am working with may noy be in any better graces.

As for when, i'd like to say in the next few weeks, but my "partner" and I are discussing those logistics as we speak.

How easy it is to replace the rotors ? Potential DIY job or trip to the shop ?

Definitely a potential yourselfer, but you need to know what you are doing. That portion of the braking system is very "normal" and unrelated to SBC. You just can't take short cuts, like pressing the pads in to make room, etc. Do it right or take it in.

Actually the biggest advantage to them is in heat soak. Steel has HORRIBLE soak (great insulator), while aluminum is better. Now, how well they may last is another topic.

forgot who I used to deal with when I designed my two piece rotors with them but the cryogenic (spelling) part was *****en... and the lasted well... but then again I didn't have to stop a 5500 lb car... it was a S351SR Speedster... a bit lighter but over 600hp... damn I miss that car!
