If you guys were comparing the 02's...I too would give the vote to the M5. I love mercedes to death, but the E39 5er is still one of my all time favorite cars of all time.
Now on that, if you told me you were comparing 03's...I would say MB all the way. The new 5 looks like azz...
My 2 cents...Good luck with the decision...

I say the M5. All around great car and that V8 was a great motor. 400hp and 6 speed. If you are looking for a driver in daily traffic get the 210. I was looking at the M5 as a second car to the E and the only thing holding me back is sitting in Bay Area traffic.
When the sales guy took me out in the M5 he smoked the tires right past the dealership as he pulled out. Told him "Thanks for the ride but if you take out all your potentail sales this way in this car I would want a new clutch thrown in and extended warranty"

I don't think he heard me as he was having too much fun getting it sideways.
And when we switched positions and it was my turn to drive he turned the ESP back on and told me to take it easy. Needless to say since he did it I let the M run. Didn't pitch it sideways into a drift but definitely got it going. I think I scared him a bit!
The car on the outside was beautiful but the inside was kind of trashed for a 4 year old car and the price was like $48K.

Isn't it something how 9 out of 10 guys that responded to this question on MBworld are in favor of the E39 M5 (myself wholeheartedly included)? And for those who try to generalize about board members being blind to anything but their cars . . . .

OK, but a lot of the responders never owned a W210. A much better car than the W211, and better than the M5 as a daily driver. My '02 was a great car and looked even better, beside the fact that W210 will be still running strong after the M is in the junk yard.

your 210 is damn beautiful. i was trying to get my wife to go for an 01 as a daily driver but she said no to 2 E AMG cars.

M5
E39 M5 over a w210 anyday of the week. Just make sure you buy a one previous owner car with warranty as electrics can be dodgy.
It's much better looking, stops and goes much better. Oh, and get Le Mans Blue!

For the 12K extra he is considering paying for the M over the E, he could add FI and the W210 will evaporate the M5 like it's in reverse. It will still be reliable and it will be faster than even the W211 E55, just ask James.

But the E39 M5 is one of the all-time greats. The W210 will still be only that.

More likely than not, it will be the other way around. You may have had a great experience with your W210, but MB is finally admitting its quality problems in the recent past and the W210 is unfortunately one of the models from those dark days.
IMHO the W210 is a fussy design. "Cleaner" lines such as the E39 always stand the test of time better. And isn't E39 the last 5 series before Bangle/Hoydonk (sp?) and iDrive? In that respect, it could conceivably be revered in the future the way the W124 is among E-classes.
Which of the two could possibly become regarded as an all-time great with the passage of time? If I were a betting man, I would wager on the E39 M5 over W210 E55, no doubt.

Do not agree with that post....the 210 e55 was one of the most trouble free cars mercedes has made in recent history and this fact has been chronicled hundreds of times on this forum sorry, it has been a long time since 1985 (380?) ..........catch up with the rest of us............with all that being said do you make the decision like a single mother buying a camry?.......(JD Power) and all or do you concede that the m5 is a stud and the styling is pure teutonic genious ........m5

The NA 5.4 is very reliable. In fact, as I pointed out, it will live a long and happy life even with forced induction. Same for the 5 speed auto. It was a mistake to sell my '02 as it had 50K on the clock and was as tight as the day I bought it, no B.S. I have not found that to be the case with any 5 series, not that it is a bad car at all. While the W210's do have a few definite weak points, none are a big deal. I would guess that it was/is the best of the post merger cars to date. The W210 has also been acknowledged as one of the safest cars ever made. Couple that with the exclusivity of there being at least 4-6 times as many M5's for any given year as the W210 E55, it still gets my vote.
Edit: Talking about rare, the posted '02 was 1 of 86 Tectite grey 2002 E55's produced for the US market. I miss her.
