Porterfield Rotors for the E55 W211

Wooohoo. I have been in contact and they have been extra cool and open to working with us. I am heading up there on Friday with R (03C4s) to talk to the owner. I'll update after. Daryoosh was nice enough to partner up with me and provide a set of used E55 rotors for use as fittment.

Also, the E63 rotors "look" identical. Only the fronts were checked, since the E63 rears are not composites. If I want to fit them, I can not return them. So, I will wait and see how the porterfields go since I want all four corners done. If that falls through, I'll settle to try the E63 fronts as an interim improvement for about $1000.

What will be the difference between the porterfields and the stock? will they be composite like the 63's? or is it just the way they are made that you are hoping to be superior to what you have now?

They will be composite, floating, cross cast, AND slotted. My gripe with the OEM ones is two fold. One, they are heavy. The new ones will need to be ~10lbs lighter per unit to suffice. Second, I hate the way the OEM ones dissipate heat. They are strong, but can't go more than a few miles under hard braking before I get a heat sign. That is why we are going with MAX heat dissipation.

Next steps are to add ducting to help, and consider larger diameter rotors, if needed.

jang - i read somewhere that the heat sign on the dash is determined by a mathematical equation based off of their usage, not actual heat. i wonder if anyone knows for certain if the heat sign is based on actual heat or by math

Woah!! I never have heard that. Can anyone verify what type of sensor?

I forgot to add that the rotors will be cryo treated as well.

Anything else people want me to ask? Post it before 1pm PST, and I'll be sure to ask. I am meeting with the owner.

I might be interested in getting a set as well if they'll reduce some weight at the corners.

They'll be 2 piece right?

Has you tried contacting Stoptech to see if they'll make a rotor? Their aero rotors worked well at shedding heat on my C32. Rotors were almost cool to the touch after driving.

There is no if. I have two boxes in my trunk. The OEM fronts are so heavy that i could barely get them over the lip of my trunk!!

Minimal requirements are 40lbs weight loss total or the project is dead.

sweet, I saved about 5 lb with my HRE's and 19's over stock, so some more weight savings will be nice. Did you see my edit about stoptech?

That will be finalized today. My design parameters were about $2000. I am willing to go as high as $2500 IF all the "nice to haves" are included.

The options are:
A - I get a single set made and am on my way. Probably cost me more, but possible.
B - Porterfield wants to use the run as a development project so they can sell the rotors after, which means I want a good price for myself and my MBWorlders on the first round. After that, they do as they please.
C - Porterfield just makes me as many sets as I want at a volume discount and i sell them. Porterfield will obviously not be able to sell them to anyone else, since my team helped them develop them.

NDA is in place, for the haters.

I spoke with Porterfield today. It is not feasible for them (through Coleman) to make the rear sets (hats) at a reasonable price, but he gave me the contact info of a guy in Huntington Beach who is supposed to have a nice set made up. i am getting worried that this is also EVO's source and don't know how that kind of relationship works out. I'll obviously follow up, but if these hats were designed for EVO, it would seem only fair that they have the right to them, no? If not, I just wonder why we woulod not have heard of this source before since dealing with the hats (especially rears with the integrated e-brake) is such an intricate thing.

I will. haven't had time today. Porterfield implied they would sell me the set (front and rear). I just don't want to buy basically EVO rotors through their own maker if it isn't an improvemnet. Maybe I can at least get a different rotor on it as the rotor is what I have not liked about EVO (along with their blow me offniss).

Hi Mark,
Here is the info: 949 350 6194 speak to Martin. I will also contact him from a business aspect, but may would be helpful if you followed up as well from a technical aspect. He is supposed to have a nice HAT and rotor setup (all 4). I just don't want to "steal" EVO's development if that is indeed what is going on, although I would assume he can't sell that away if it were the case.
