Anyone know why the 211 E55 doesn't use a 275/35/18 tire on the rear? I'm thinking a pair is my first upgrade. That size closer to the overall diameter of the 245/40/18 front tire than is the 265/35/18 the car comes with, and I've always understood it's best to have the front and rear tire diameter match as closely as possible.

Anyone running currently 275's in the rear? Any rubbing or other fitment issues? Do the instruments still stay happy (e.g., ABS sensors, etc.)?

I have 285 Nittos on my car. No problems with fit.

285's are too wide to safely mount on a 9" wheel - it's not an approved wheel width for a 285 tire. Minimum width for a 285/35/19 tire is 9.5". The narrower wheel pinches the sidewalls in too much. Did you go with a wider wheel, or stick with the stock 9" wheels?

I am using the stock rears with 285s. Nittos are very narrow...




Every tire is different, you have to check with each manufacturer to see what fits on what.

You are correct. Almost everybody upgrades to 275 PS2. The reason why the stock tire is only 265 is the XL load rating . Conti tires come XL in 265 but not in 275. No rubbing with 275s. Not even with SL wheels 18x9.5/ET33.

I'm not saying the 285 won't fit, I'm just saying it's not designed to mount on a 9" wide rim and Nitto doesn't spec that fitment either. It's a safety issue.

Ok, so stick with whatever tire it is that you're comfortable running. I'm relaying my own personal experience. The 285/35 18 Nittos fit the stock rear 18" wheels. The lip is flush with the sidewall.

You guys need to wake up. Get a set of the rear rims, put the 275s on them and run them in the FRONT!! There is no rubbing what so ever in the rear or front with that configuration.

285s on the rear 9" is a bit pushing it. Safety wise, you'll be fine. Actually, it will even help with launching, but you will have more wiggle on lateral Gs (if that matters).

When did Nitto start making narrow tires? Their tires are the reportedly the widest on the market. They brag about their tires having the largest contact patch. They have a very broad shoulder - I could not run the 245/40/18 up front using a 18x8 et35 rim because the broad shoulder rubbed on the inside suspension. I had to run the 245 Nittos on the OEM 18x8 et31 rims.

Sorry to dig up the old thread. I'm thinking that it's about time to put some better tires on the rear of my E55. There is little point upgrading anything until I can actually get some better grip over the stock tire size. What is the general consensus on max tire width on the stock 18" OEM wheels? Anyone know of any good onine tire deals?
