100% Glycol

With all the talk about heat soak and changing to Johnson IC pump and 160 degree thermostat etc, well has anyone tried 100% Glycol in the cooling system. I've been told by a reputable source that it will bring the temp. down about 4%.

that source is incorrect. pure watter will do better at cooling than eg.

ChiroMikey has it right...check here :-

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/et...col-d_146.html

where it says :-

Note! The specific heat capacity of an ethylene glycol based water solution is less than the specific heat of clean water. For a heat transfer system the circulated volume must be increased.

In a 50% solution with operational temperatures above 36 oF the specific heat capacity is decreased with aprox. 20%. The reduced specific heat capacity must be compensated by circulating more fluid.

Automobile antifreeze solutions should not be used in HVAC systems because they contain silicates that may cause fouling. Silicates in automobile antifreeze are used to protect aluminum engine parts.

OK, thanks.

So what does everyone here do?...I presume the mix that the car comes with is ok.

it all depends on where you live. a 50/50 mix is fine for just about every application. if you live in an area that doesn't get cold enough to freeze you could get away with pure water and water wetter and see a noticable drop in water temps. note that some of the other benefits of eg solutions are it's lubricant and anti-corrosive properties to maintian your cooling system and keep ph in check, although i believe water wetter claims to have some lubricating additives.

another alternative would be propylene glycol coolants such as evan's npg+. it's a waterless system that far has better properties than a water/eg set-up. there are some special requirements to properly run evan's but they're worth the trouble as far as i'm concerned.

all this aside, it's really the cooling system that's our limitation rather than what's in it but i guess every little bit helps.

That Evans NPG+ sounds good but evidently they don't recommend it if there is an electric pump in the system. I guess I'll just stick with the EG mix at 70/30.

Evans coolants are unique to all other types of automotive cooling solutions. Use of Evans coolants requires your vehicle's cooling system be completely free of any other coolants, including water and all types of anti-freeze. Use of Evans prep fluid is recommended to properly decontaminate your cooling system. Also, an Evans coolant pump is recommended for all modified vehicles making higher than stock horsepower levels. Evans coolants can not be used with electric water pumps. Please call a Thunder Racing sales rep at 877.516.7223 if you have any questions.

i believe the main reason for the non-compatibility with electric water pumps is the viscosity. npg and npg+ have a very high viscosity. if you're serious about this upgrade, check with evan's about their npg-r. it is a lower viscosity with an even higher boiling point and may be just the ticket for this situation.

Thanks m8. I think it will be worth the call. Wonder if anyone has done it to the SC AMG V8?
