Exactly, on paper these cars are tiny fractions of a second apart. Arguing over which one is ultimately faster is stupid as there are going to be slower and faster examples of the same car, as we have seen. They are both awesome cars with a slightly different focus. For what its worth it didnt look like a launch control start in that vid, judging on LC videos ive seen in the past.

And saying that any car that does 0-60 in ~4.5secs does not launch hard is stoopid!

What compression are you running in your beast? I had 2 friends that friend their motors died back in 2002 on an '01 Oct model (problematic). 5 psi or someting low and the engine melted given the 11.5 compression.

Brw, do you know Curtis in VA...he has a nice black '03 M3. Its not too fast but Best looking one I have seen so far exterior wise.

Yes i was on stock compression. The stock S54 is good for about 600rwhp on race gas without any issues. Its amazing counting the high compression but the engine is very strong. Im having mine built right now (just pistons/rods) and were shooting for 1000rwhp out of it.

You had friends with S/C E46 M3's that blew their engines? I actually have never heard of ANY FI E46 M3 blow yet. I know about the stock engines having bearing problems back in the day but thats a long gone issue (recall).

 

........ok, some of this stuff has already been decided. The W211 E55 is faster than the M5 from 0-100mph. The M5 is faster above 100mph. Tests results vary, but this seems to be a general consensus.

........The E63 and the M5 appear similar 0-60. What will be interesting is a race between the M5 and E63 above 100mph.

.......as far as modified cars go, you can put a nuclear power plant in your engine bay and run 1/4 mile in 2 secs. Modified E55's are running 11.0-11.3. With nitrous, two have made it into the 10's. This is faster than an enzo, but you don't see these E55 owners thumping their chest in the ferrari forum. One of them Malcolm, does not even talk about his car. I saw a honda civic run 10.9 in the 1/4 mile. The car had two turbos. Should he go the M3 forum and thump hi chest? There is an authomobile heirachy(sp?). True enthusiasts understand this. You can pitch the E55 and E63 against the M5. The M3 is not in the same league. Just as 10sec E55 is no Ferrari Enzo.

I'm hearing a lot of talk about the m5 beast and how fast they are and it is
truly a nice car. How ever the best I've seen them run is 12:6 in the quarter.
I have also driven the M5 and I can tell you that the car is a stranger to the
drag strip as the e55 is to the twisties. THAT SAID DON'T FORGET...CHASE IS
A RACE!!! The thing that I notice most while driving m5 was the lack of torque
needed to this much mass from a dead stop.Thats why the e55 basically runs
a way from it .Then the charger kicks in and the race starts to look like just
what we saw.60 foot on the e55 1.8 vs. 60 foot on m5 2.0 this is what hap-
pens and a race.

 

Tests do very greatly except for higher speeds when its obvious the M5 takes the cake. Down low it varies, we have seen it go both ways. And to be honest with the proper tires (Lots of E55's have done it,No M5 has done it yet) the M5 should be able to take it as well.

We have seen numerous tests where the M5 was faster and now a C&D test that shows the E63 is faster. But its funny b/c C&D's past M5 tests were much faster then their new numbers for the M5.

As far as i know, this thread was made by a Benz fanatic and its here b/c its a botched race where the E55 wins. And some guys have gotten all jolly about it thinking its a fair race when clearly the jump is by the E55 and the race is just up to 60 (M5 is smoking tires most of the way).

Honestly i wouldnt want to compare my M3 to the E55, but it gets to a point where the E55 guys think they are faster then anything out there. Im only on the net really b/c my business is on it.

WOw you found articles about the S54 blowing, there was a nation wide recall that replaced defective bearing b/c of it. We havent heard of any S54's blow ever since. I can also give you articles about the E55 breaking trannies, overheating blowers etc... But do you understand the point now?

The M5 is a beast, it just needs traction down low. I know the E55 guys have good wheel/tire setups to drag. It is a stranger b/c traction in 1st/2dn just sucks, slap on some DR's and i bet it will get some great times. Just give some more M5 owners the chance to do so, they are too busy out there enjoying their cars right now. I know of M5's that are in the 11's with 20 inch wheels right now. One with nitrous running 11.5@125 on 20 inch wheels.

60 foot is highly dependent on tires. M5 does lack TQ but it is lighter and has a higher rev limit as well as more HP.

It is a hell of a car, i just drove the M6 and was speechless.

Drag radials wont help the M5 much because when I've seen them run, traction out the hole is NOT the problem. Its the TORQUE that its lacking. Running 11.5 on nitrous is not a very big accomplishment, even if he is running on 20's. How big of a shot was he running? Put that same shot on an E55 on 20's and it would demolish that number.
Just as a side note- Without powerbraking at all I can cut a consistent 1.7 60'. Its not solely because of the tires, its the TORQUE!!!!!!!!
