Car owners, criminals seek status
February 18, 2007

One of the funnier questions prospective employers ask job applicants when they give them personality tests is: "If you were a car, what kind of car would you like to be?"
Most people take this kind of question very seriously. They assume that no employer is going to want them if they say they'd like to be an inexpensive Yugo. So they usually say they'd like to be a Mercedes, or maybe a Cadillac. We all like to give ourselves a little status whenever we can.
That's why it was no surprise the other day when we learned that more than a few people have been showing up at the parts departments of their automobile dealerships and buying replacement emblems to put on their cars to make them look like more expensive models. For instance, for about $65 some Mercedes owners are buying the AMG emblem found on high-end Mercedes.
They put this symbol on their less-expensive models to make them look more upscale. Whether this fools many people is debatable, but it infuriates some owners of the more expensive Mercedes who are now asking dealers to put a stop to it.
Certain people believe buying high-priced products will bestow superiority on them. Others believe buying fakes will do the same -- give them status. Between groups of people, there's a big difference in what's considered to be a status symbol.
For example, a high-end Glock handgun is considered to be a status symbol by many young criminals. Most of them can't afford to buy a real Glock, so knockoffs of the high-end handgun are flooding the market. Even though many of the replicas only can be used to fire air pellets, staring down the barrel of one is terrifying and so the use of the imitation guns in crimes is up by more than 50 percent in many cities. Some young like-to-be toughs carry replicas of expensive handguns simply as a fashion accessory.
In the world of crime, just as in the world of cars, we have a cultural identity built on image, not substance. So much for the American myth of equality.

I was in Aruba last week and they have a few white E class taxis that are CDI 220's. One was badged as an AMG. Wish I had taken a picture. Nothing like that AMG diesel clatter.

I better stock up on my $65 AMG badges, before dealers acquiesce to these angry owners of more expensive Mercedes...

Actually Who cares?

I think it would be the ultimate stealth by pulling off the AMG and 55 badges and put a 320 and CDI badge in place of everything.
Of course I'm sure there are a few on the board that are not secure enough to even remove their badges much less change it to something less than what they have.
Besides I thought the best form of flattery is imitation?

I believe they might be factory CDIs with the AMG appearance package. I have read about AMG CDIs on wikipedia or somewhere.

I think there were three E's but only one had the AMG stuck on the trunk lid. They all looked alike otherwise. Now I REALLY wish I'd taken a picture. And it wasn't a CDI 320, it was a 220. I guess that's part of what I found humorous. A diesel 220 has to be the lowest horsepower W211 you can get, and then you stick the AMG badge on it. Come on, that's pretty funny.

OMG! I'm in Aruba right now and its so funny that I came across your post. My brother and I saw the exact same car. It even had the quad tail pipes hanging off the rear bumper!

I actually have an amg badge on my 15 month old daughters boogaboo.
Is that OK?
I am considering adding an AMG badge to my replica "glock" for "street cred".....
But the Panasonic badge didnt make the picture on my vizio any clearer but I tried....
I see 500s all the time with amg's badges...
Does it come with the amg package?
How do ask my neighbor down the street why he has a s55 amg with no amg seats, no calipers, no exhaust.. and that was only the quick visual.. Is that politcally correct?
Thanks for your help.

It has fully AMG package, same rims and bodykit as an E63, in fact from the outside u would swear it was an E63 !
