E63 Shifting and Mileage Information
With MBTECH's help, I figured out the transmission issues in the 7 speed. I don't know anything about the software that controls the "adaptive" facility of the transmission, but I know that if I baby the car (drive it like a normal car) the transmission accommodates to that manner and never downshifts firmly. If I mix driving styles, the learning process is conflicted and it takes awhile for it to get back to soft shifts.
My uneducated guess is that the torques converter and line pressure are bumped up for spirited driving and they are reduced when normal driving is resumed--with a bit of confusion which accounts for the firm downshifts. Anyway, I am now convinced that my transmission is fine.
Was wondering what kind of mileage other people are getting with the E63. On the expressway, driving between 75 and 85 (some bursts higher) I am getting about 21.3. Today I drove to Milledeville, GA on 2 lane rural roads and averaged about 60 MPH. My mileage was 24.5. I am thunderstruck by the performance. Wondering what kind of mileage others are experiencing?

My miles consists primarily of highway driving. I would say 75/25 between highway/city roads. My average is 18.3 mpg. I've had a few ~22 mpg when driving at least 30 miles @ ~60 mph. Your 24.5 mpg is incredible.

I agree, and I checked it closely to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
