Just made a post about this on another thread, but it seems like this is the one where it's at!

Sorry, not to dig up an old thread, but it just happened to me again! Shoot! I first did just the drop in K&N for 3 months, no problems. Took out the charcoal finally 3 weeks ago. CEL just came on this afternoon.

I'm still debating what caused it. Oddly enough I think the fuel has something to do with it.

I haven't quite worked out the logic, but would it make sense that a higher octane fuel would not allow the car to run less lean? I think that's the consensus on what the code is that's it throws.

I haven't thought it through yet. Higher octane isn't more horsepower, it just gives ability to compress more without detonation. But unfortunately here in CA, we only have 91 octane. Because it's 91, does the ECU automatically adjust for it altering timing and hence detonation and temp of engine? Which in turn potentially causes the engine to run lean?

Only reason why i say this is because for the past few weeks I usually do a mixture of 100 octane and 91 to get a blend somewhere in between 93. But i just filled up today a full tank without the 100 because it wasn't close by.

Huh... a conundrum. Any thoughts?

It's usually a lean code that it throws because it's getting more air. I have no idea how lean it actually thinks it is..? I had this problem, BUT mine was due to leaking intake gaskets, which I would seriously hope is not the problem on a brand new car.

It's a little interesting that some cars have removed the charcoals and put them back on so many times with no CEL what so ever while others experienced CEL right after charcoal removal or re-installation

Hey guys I noticed the black plastic part on top of the intake, top of the black x's, if we remove this part would we gain any HP?

I noticed that piece as well. I didn't play around with it too much. I looked below at the air filter to see where it was dirtiest to get an idea of air flow. Which surprisingly seemed like more air flowed from the front, smaller section of the manifold / plenum. But I felt like if I removed it, air would flow evenly through the length of the filter causing extra wear on one part of the filter over other parts.

UPDATE on CEL and Octane: So, as mentioned earlier, my CEL came on 3 weeks after I took out the carbons, which was 3 months after I put in the K&N's. It was on for a week, all the time I was trying the ECU reset to no avail. I'm still under the impression it's not so much an ECU reset as it is a throttle reset (meaning it doesn't reset the ECU).

In any case, I filled up with 35% 100 Octane on the last fill up. And 20 miles into the tank, today my CEL just turned off on its own!

Has that ever happened to anyone? IMO seems like it's leaning towards the octane.

which tune did you get. ws thinking about it too. but didn't want to open a whole can of worms with one.

I was trying the reset where you turn it on, step on the peddle, turn it off, then release peddle. I've had other cars where it was a reset, albeit a little more complicated. But it didn't seem to do anything for me e63

Air Box

Hey guys. I have the e350. Former Amg owner and I Know I'm in the wrong forum. But the regular guys don't do much in way of mods. And I'm noticing the E class non AMG owners talk about silly stuff.

Does the Charcole filter removal apply to the reg v8 and v6 engines on the 2010 and 2011's W212.

Also want to get up to at least 300hp from the stock 268hp. Any pulley's, exhaust, chips available.

Any good suggestions would be much appreciated.

Just pulled my charcoal filters today. I think my car has been suffocating. seemed to be a bit more responsive to me hammering the gas. I wonder if charcoal filters get more restrictive over time. cause it sure seemed to be noticeable. don't know if it's actually faster, but definitely felt more responsive.

It is strange. I had my charcoals removed, no CEL, then after several months installed K&N and airbox mod from TTM (cuts out the black plastic leading to the MAF) -- no CEL. So, I am not sure why some do and some don't.
Not sure about power gains, but felt more responsive.

most likely they are not getting the boxes to seal up correctly, causing lean condition.

How to get the airbox off

Should be easy but I dont want to break the clips. How do you remove the airboxes. The main cover that is connected to them, does that lift off completely or does the top come off and the airboxes stay connected to the engine somehow?

Jon, thanks pal and I did look up your DIY Spark Plug change, which by the way will help me on my W211. But for the airboxes on either, especially on the W212, I cant see how to remove the engine cover that lays over the airboxes. That doesnt seem to be present in your DIY.
