Jerking When Blower Engages (I think/was told)...

Fellas:

I posted this on "the other site" last June after I got my E. I got very little feedback nor a solution. The dealer essentailly told me this was "normal". The car now has about 9,200 miles and still has the problem. I don't have a lot of experience with supercharged cars but have been in a GTP with 130K miles (nice pull in first gear!) that did not have the problem. To me, seems silly the E55 would...

Thoughts? Here was my description of the problem:

I have 2006 with 650 miles on it and am seeing random engine hesitation (no noise) at random RPM's (usually around 1,100 RPM or 3,000 RPM) under about 30% throttle. Has anyone else seen this? This happens in 1st and 2nd gears...

Again, the story I got was "that is just normal, the supercharger is engaging".

Thanks in advance for anything.

the '06's were supposed to have a newer s/c clutch that helped lessen the surge and chirp associated with s/c engagement. if you're describing a surge rather than a hesitation, then yes...it is "normal". it's one of those quirks that most of us have learned to live with. imho, it's a fair trade off to have a s/c that isn't engaged all the time and allows us to get 21mpg while cruising on the freeway. keep in mind it will get more violent if (when) you add a stage 1 pulley.

simple test:

put your tranny in manual mode and VERY slowly accelerate in 1st gear. as you slowly get the rpms just above 3300rpm you'll feel the s/c engage. if that's the surge (or hesitation as you describe it) you're talking about then yes, it is normal. if you feel something else along with that, then let us know and maybe we can help further.

my 06 does it, and I've learned to deal with it. Seems to happen when I start off slowly, and then start to give it more gas.

Just put the pedal to the floor off the line, and it doesnt happen

If I was a little too easy on the gas I would get a jerk. I just started to throttle a little more and the jerk went away. Nothing radical, but basically not being afraid of the throttle. At the point were it would normally jerk just a give it a little more gas. My ride smoothed out.

I had my '06 in several times and not only did they do nothing about it, they couldn't even say for sure it was the SC. My complaint is/was that it's not consistent. I was told by my tuner that there are things that can be done to minimize (not eliminate) the "stumble", but good luck finding a dealer that will spend the time to check and optimize the clutch action. Some are worse than others, and mine definitely got worse with K-1. My fix is lots of throttle.

Welcome to having 500+ pounds of torque at very low RPM's. Expect the car to jerk a little.

Drive with the tranny in "C" mode and it is less noticeable, then when its time to run back into "S" mode.

Its amazing that alot of people that own a supercharged car with alot of horsepower think its gonna act like a honda civic, these cars have alot of torque and power, that surge means use me, its tryin to tell you that it wants to be stepped on and whistle and whine down the block, hope this helps.

I have the same problem, and I was told it's "normal" by my SA.
I'm glad I am not the only one that experiences this. It can be major annoying driving around town at low RPM.

Well lit certainly appears I was straightened-out by many of you on this topic!

Believe it or not - the surge did not bug me all that bad (yes, a trade off for a 500+ foot pound tourqe car and I get that) but I did think it was odd.

A little bird who is salty she no longer has her LS430 (my wife) gives me a hard time when she drives it or feels it when riding in it and I was sick of hearing about it from her. "The car is just too fast." "Too jerky" "i had in the the C mode with the 2nd gear start at I still peeled out." Blah, blah, blah (she is only 34 so that is another story)...

So, the "big tourque" and "tradeoff" claim still does not help my case with her - especially with a $90K sticker (didn't pay that but you get the point)...

In the meantime, I will enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback.

TK

Let her drive one of those C230 loaners for a day or so,that'll plumb her up.

I may be speaking for many of us . . . that I agree with you. Even though I accept it, it is still odd.

With normal passenger I have to be in C mode. By myself or with some crazy passenger, then it will go into S mode.

Totally LOL on you and Jrocket's responses...

My dealer provides Buck' for loaners. You guys only have part of the story with my wife and don't even want to have the discussion. All I can tell you is she is not a fan of my E.
