Firebird drags
met up with bluemax who ran his e63 tonight. he did a damn good job for only getting one run on such a crappy track. he can fill in the details on his run.
track prep was typical firebird...horrible and slick!!! even with d/r's i couldn't get on the throttle like i wanted to without going sideways! my pr last winter on street tires and before slr cams was 11.60 @ 119mph with a 1.71 60ft. tonight, having to be very careful and modulate the throttle at launch, i was only able to match those times with a 11.61 @ 119mph and a 1.70 60ft. as some of you may recall, i forcasted that my recent mods wouldn't yield any performance gains yet because of the warmer conditions and i was quite accurate (i did expect to be able to improve my 60ft times with the d/r's though...shame on firebird raceway for such a poor job).
my conclusions are to consider the addition of d/r's irrellevant tonight because of such poor track prep and the fact that my 60ft times were identical. this leaves me to consider the gains from the slr cams. considering my previous pr was obtained during winter with a da of 1100 and tonights temps were 20* warmer with a very strong side/head wind and a da of 3077, yes...i do believe there were performance gains from the cams. exactly how much i won't know until i get to run next winter during similar conditions.
tonight i'll probably go to sleep dreaming what it would have been like to run at a track like atco or e-town.

We just did drags at Los Angeles County Raceway in 60 mph winds, sand, oil, zero track prep...Never could imagine a car spinning wheels the entire 1/4 mile? btw the cls 63 beat a ZO6 and it is on film. I was so happy with our group or rookies. Times were pathetic but nobody was getting anything under 13, not one car did a sub 13 1/4mi. I was glad the weather sucked cause we had a bad track to ourselves. sixty three was a bit better than I expected vs. the Z06. Your times are even better than the motorcycles at LACR. dude ran an 11.99 @ 119. Boy is drag racing FUN

sounds like you had it worse than we did...maybe i shouldn't complain. the wind and sand did cause several of cars to lose it at the top end. drag racing is supposed to be a straight line but i was actually having to steer from half track on. i definitely used the entire lane!!!
crap was blowing all over the track...which i believe tripped a speed sensor to record a 110mph at the 1/8mile mark for one of my runs!!!

Does VHT exist out there??
I can never figure out how a track has the ballz to charge $30 to use it and they don't bother to prep it for you.
BTW - I think the prep at e-town has improved this year. It used to be that you needed to go on Sunday when the heavy hitters ran for you to count on a decent track. Which meant you got one run every two - three hours. Now it seems that even Saturday prep is good. Have not been there during the week in a while, but it used to be that they had no prep on weeknights.
My Atco trips were rentals. We paid to have the track prepped.
Chiromikey - there is no doubt that your cams have improved your car. Just wait until the winter. Maybe you can find a few guys to do a track rental with you. At least you can buy yourself some VHT. (<-- My kid wanted me to put this in here. I know it doesn't belong.)

juiciee,
firebird is in phoenix, az.
enzom,
vht does exist. in typical firebird fasion, they wait until a few people almost (or do) hit the wall then shut down the track for a while for a half-assed prep job. that ussually only lasts for a few passes. that's how i clocked last my previous pr on street tires. they shut down the track for an hour of prep because of the complaints, ran a few cars until one took out a sensor getting sideways, prepped again, and i was lucky enough to run immediately after.
i think i'll make the trip to speedworld next time.
jakpro,
you're right low 11's will happen and 11.61 in these conditions is nothing to be upset about.

I would like to thank Chiromikey for invite to the track I had a great time and look forward to meet with them in the future. I ran the 63 in manual mode with the damping set to zero and esp off. I ran 12.87 @ 112 with a 2.03 60 foot time. I spun out of the hole a little and hit the rev limiter in first gear not to hard. I think the 63 in better conditions will go mid 12's no problems.
This was my first pass in the 63. It's stock except for the filter mod and only has 2100 miles on the clock. Overall i am happy with the numbers the 63 did.

Bluemax you achieved a 12.87@112 in an E63. I think the fastest time I have seen for an E63 at Englishtown was 05VENOM who achieved a 12.899@112.5. Considering the track conitions that you ran under, the temperature must not impact your car as much as it does Chiromikey's (no disrespect). Also, Chiromikey, what times did your car run this time last year under the same conditions?

i posted the other week about az temp changes and how sluggish the car now feels. because of the temps and our crappy summer gas i ussually don't bother racing during the summer months so i really don't have anything to directly compare these times to. last night was actually a good night for us...because of the wind it cooled down to 76* around midnight! it's only going to get worse so unless i get out for a special occasion (such as jrocket coming out) i'll probably avoid the track for the rest of this summer also.

WOW , great run man .. You will definately get down there. We need some 63 runs in the mid 12's. Sounds like you did really well. I had one run near similar to yours 2.02 6o, 8.58@86 1/8 13.14 1/4 @111. All my other runs were not post worthy. We had Another 63 do a 12.99@109. You know the track sucks when the Z06 cannot break 13. Great run in your E63, Az is not too far maybe we should do an AZ, CA, NV, MB track day

Thanks Guys. I think this does help prove the E63 can run good numbers. I can't wait to try it again. I think we will see some mid 12's from from the 63 family real soon.

Thats the # 1 time on Drag Times for an E63. 12.561, some guy in a WAGON. Either way that is a great run, , we just need more passes. Our fastest 63 had 8,000 miles. Im at 4k and was running 2/10-4/10ths slower but getting better trap speed? What does that suggest? No matter this is truly a great group here and I will run my car till lease do us part!

Let me know if you wanna do Irwindale on Thursday or LACR on wed. I may do both :-). I would certainly drive out to Chandler if we could get a small group.

Now if you want to take a drive up North and run at Sac or somewhere then lets plan something.Speedworld is AZ is'nt too bad but then again the temps re climbing quickly out there so it would have to be soon and during one of the night time only races.

As much as I like to drag race,I have a hard time going to those places.1/8th mile is boring and LACR just flat out sucks.

Sorry for the hijack! Hey its about drag racing . I would drive to Speedworld, firebird, bluebird, wherever
Have you been up to Bakersfield? What about Barona? I learned to drag on the worst track in So. Cal? You pick it and I will join you man. I am sure we could get a good group of AMG's . What is the best 1/4 mile track in California?

if you guys really want to make a trip out to az, lets do it right by planning it for after summer and try to organize a track rental. that way we can at least hope for some great runs instead of succumbing to heat stroke...umm i mean heat soak. i'd hate for you to drive all the way out here sometime in the next few weeks only to discover the temps never drop below the 90's until after midnight.

i grew up on sears point (infinion) and still have family in the area but i've heard sac is where to go to get the best conditions in ca. both are just a bit far for me though.
