First ever run with E60 M5!

Was driving to town with my girlfriend to have lunch last week when I pull up at a red light next to a silver 5 series with quad exhaust. Another poser trying to pass off his 520i as an M5 i thought to myself (we have loads over here by the way) ...

No WAIT, I look again and it had M5 side grills and aero mirrors with blacked out indicators! So now its either a good fake or a real M5. He sees me too and must be wondering the same thing to himself. Btw, he was alone. Well, only one way to find out! I put my transmission to 'M' and waited anxiously ... Never ran an M5 before and have been waiting a long time

1st Run:
When the lights turn green we both roll off slowly then nail it almost simultaneously. That thing was #!$%@$ fast, an M5 for sure! I edged ahead initially but then botched my gearchange as I hit an uneven surface during shifting and traction came on big time. During that split second the Bimmer caught up and even though I regained power in time, he had the momentum and I feared the worst. Luckily the massive AMG torque came to my rescue and I managed to hang on side by side through 2nd. By middle of 3rd I was about 2 cars ahead and he backed off as we were approaching a bend. We stop again side by side at the next set of lights and give each other the thumbs up.

2nd run:
Lights turn green again, we both turn right and as soon and he straightens up he guns it and I follow suit. No mistakes this time and I pull on him through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. By end of first he was at my bumper, by end of 2nd he was about 2 cars behind and by middle of third about 3 cars behind. I think we hit about 100mph before slowing down for traffic.

The M5 looked stock and I was very impressed with how fast it was. I know its very hot over here and heat might have had an effect on the outcome, but at least its still a win

Russ:

I dynoed the car on a notoriously conservative dyno and got only 529bhp and 807Nm of torque. A 360 Challenge Stradale dynoed only 340bhp on the same day. We all believe the dyno is using the wrong correction factor and it is always off by around 10% so I believe my car should be putting out around 580hp ATF.

X-tian:

Last time I raced an M-car on a twisty, he flipped the car so no more twisties for me!

Good kill, but not as impressive as I would have thought with all those mods.

Well to his credit he said the M5 looked stock doesn't necessarily mean it is stock. Good kill in my book

Its pretty easy to tell if an M5 is stock, it sounds like a diesel in stock trim.

Modded, it sounds more like an F1 car.

I think the most impressive thing about this story is they got to 100 mph in Singapore.
I am assuming it's Singapore. There's NO WAY to run 100 mph in Central London :-))

Point taken but exhaust is not the only mod that can be done to the M.

No, but in 90% of cases, it's the first. After maybe the charcoal mod.

humidity and heat are not good friends of the 55

no matter how many mods it has..

I would give the slight edge to the NA cars under those conditions.

Not saying the location but you can do so in Central London with the right car. I remember doing so a couple of times on Park Lane at night

Yes, I thought I would be faster than that. But having said that, the car is definitely faster at night when its 5-6 deg cooler.

But the problem is the looks IMO, I just dont get a good feeling and when spending that much on a car its too much to overcome. But then I realized the M5's are seriously dropping in value (not to say the 55's arent but they have been around for almost 5 years). Check out these sales (auction but you get the idea):

Vic, how are "factory" and "regular" rated on a scale of 1 to 10?

I would say 0-100, 20/40 -100 the e55 will win but at higher speeds the m5 will win.
