Noobie Question: If SLR has 650hp, why not E55

Hello Ladies & Gents... My name is Charlie, and I've been a long time Car Nut. Having gone through a 190E 2.6 with the 2.3-16v and almost done the m104 conversion before selling it... I've been hooked on cars.

We have an 03 S600 Sport, which I'm still convincing the dealer to see if the S65 TCU software can be flashed on to our 03 S600. I've read a few people have great success with just did modification alone.

But, as I get ready to sell my last project car (99 BMW M3 with 500+rwhp) I'm looking for a daily driver to go along with my 97 Acura NSX-T (it has 140k.)

The E55 comes to mind as a perfect car, espeically since I can seat 5 here. It was that or a Porsche 996 Turbo. But having the NSX made it seem redundant. I've been watching with admiration for a 2 years now with what VRUS has been doing. I'm now thinking that there is major headroom left in these motors. If the McLaren SLR 722 from the factory can do 650hp & 605 lb.ft. of torque, and motor capacity is the same... then what is different. I've seen the Throttle Body, Manifold, and so forth... but I'm more of a technical person. I want the data.

Again, just chiming in. I'm atually keeping an eye out for an 03 E55, w/ Nav, w/ Pano, & w/ 2-tone leather (Blue or Red) on Silver. The Presidentials are nice, but they are going for more of a premium then they are worth. Besides the interior hasn't changed much since the 93 190E 2.6 Limited Edition as far as color schemes go!

Thanks again.

(PS, in the forums I visit, they have a sticky at the most popular things to do... I'd love to have a sticky like that instead of posting after searching, cause you might not know what to search for!) I'm sure this will be a post repeated for many, but I'll learn quickly. I promise.

First welcome to the forum.

Next, welcome to Mercedes tuning. Most of us are shooting in the dark on info from Mercedes.

I had the EXACT same thoughts so I took a stab at putting in the SLR cams in my E55. Mercedes would give us ZERO information on the cams. No specs, no measurements...NOTHING. Basically had to cross my fingers and go for it. We got lucky and the SLR cams did fit with a simple spacer added.

Basically the next step would be the SLR intercooling system, which I believe would mean purchasing the SLR supercharger too. Only setback is the massive cash which I just can't justify at this point. Some guys are working on copying the system and that should bring the cost down.

Would love to take a whack at the dry sump system from the SLR someday, but can't even imagine the cash involved on that experiment.

Honestly, it all comes down to a cash issue.

We all share what we learn as we invest monster cash in certain mods and that is what makes this forum one of the best.

Thanks... I've spent boat loads on the M3 doing the same and I was hoping that with the E55 already FI's and with a Twin Screw (my favorite form of FI) then I'll be at a good start. But doing a little research and its seems pulley and Software can run you $2500+.

As with the M3, I learned a little too late that you can chase HP on the dyno and have it be useless if you can't get it to the road. The 60% LSD would probably be my first mod.

I guess the best question to ask, especially all the Experienced ones is this:
If you had to do it again, which order and what mods would you do?

Thanks.
Charlie.

im tryin to stay with just the bolt on mods im not as crazy a jakpro and others besides i dont have the mony for all that crazyness. so if you go just bolt ons i would start with
1) pully (ecu is option at this point)
2) extra cooling either a high flow pump or like i did extra heat exchanger also
3) headers ( id probably get ecu tune at this time) 100cel cats, and mufflers
4) 80mm TB (i love this mod)
5) LSD
6) toe links
7) carbofiber air box (not alot of gains but i like its looks)
8) light weight wheels and rotors (not a ton of gains but looks and gains)
after these your next choice is cams or speed shift im gonna do speed shift but not 100% on cams yet.
