6 speed in W211 E55

According to Autoexpress, a 6 speed gearbox will be offered as an option on the E55. I do not belive it is true but has anyone heard of this being offered as an option? Other than that they give a nice little writeup on the new E55, also some nice pics.

Go to www.autoexpress.co.uk., click on news.

Enjoy

Well, I think that the Auto Express article is correct. I've been told that Mercedes is going to a 6-spd automatic transmission, to replace the 5-spd auto. Not a manual, though.

I have seen the same in print. That Mercedes has a new 6-Speed Automatic.

mercedes is workin´ on a 6-speed automatic but it´s not ready and the offical brochures for the E55 AMG told me it will have the well known AMG speed-shift. maybe they introduce it later, but i haven´t heard anything about it.

to know for sure we will have to wait for the first tests or december when we get the first E55 to our dealership so i can try it

Felix, would you be willing to send me an official E55 AMG brochure from Germany? I'd be happy to reimburse you for costs, etc. Please let me know what you think.

Does this infer that we earlier purchasers of the E55 will be left with an inferior 5spd auto - the sepcs on my order are definately for an 5spd, with an update model released shortly thereafter?

2006 E55 Black
No matter what the 2004 E55 has, future years will get better. That's why I am in no hurry. I love my 2002 E55, and I'll put down a deposit on maybe the 2005 or 2006 E55. It can't be anything but better than the 2004.

i have an "internal" brochure called vorteile, which is only to inform our salesmen about the new cars. i cannot send it to customers because it contains detailed information about the E55 competitors (BMW M5, and Audi RS6).

i would really like to send you something but it´s not allowed

I agree! I also wish they'd make the F1-trannies a la the 360 Modena and the M3 SMG tranny.

KrispyK: the paddleshift system on the SL55 and 211E55 isn't enough like the F1's??
Why not??

"The E 55 AMG is equipped with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission, which adapts itself to the driving style – be it dynamic or more laid-back. In the manual mode ”M” the driver can change gear using the buttons on the steering wheel, rather like in a Formula 1 racing car. The right-hand button behind the steering wheel spoke is pressed to shift up a gear, the left-hand button to change down".

It's not like F1 manuals because a) it still uses a torque-converter (lock-up or otherwise) as opposed to an electro-mechanical clutch and b) from what I've read off the web, the transmission also automatically downshifts if one stomps on the pedal. In other words, it won't hold only the particular gear you've selected.

In effect, except for the torque converter that locks up from 1st gear on up, it's similar to the same transmission that's in all the MBs now, with the touch-shift transmission, other than the fact that instead of hitting the gear-shift-lever right and left, you have extra buttons on the steering wheel.

For whatever it's worth, that's all I've read so far. If you have different information, I'd like to hear that as well; believe me, I'd be happy if what you're suggesting is correct, but I don't think it is ...
