2006 CLS55 AMG
Traded the E55 for a CLS55

After posting a thread about trading the E55 for a SL55 and doing some test driving, I decided to trade the E55 for a 2006 CLS55 a few weeks ago. As much as I love the SL, it just wasn't going to be as practical for me with 4 kids. I usually take a couple of them with me on runs to the store, etc. I liked the E55, but I love the look of the CLS55 better and it is a tad more luxurious inside to me and the seats are much more comfortable. Plus the E55 looks too much like all the other E-classes on the road. Thanks for everyone's input and advice. I am posting a couple of pics I took today.

I've been contemplating this exact trade... I love the lines of the CLS. Given that they only made 'em with the supercharged motor for one year I really want to snap one up while they are to be found with low miles.

If you don't mind me asking, what did the trade cost you? I'm in an '05 E55 with ~40k on the clock. Want the CLS55 with low miles (but definitely used). Any hints as to what I should expect to have to pony up for the swap?

Nice ride, I did the same thing but opted for the slower car with less torque. Man I love it

The fact that they only made it one year was another reason I wanted the CLS55. I got this one with only 8300 miles on the clock. My E55 had 25K on the clock and I took a hit, getting only $52,000 in trade for it. I bought the E55 a year ago w/17K and put 8K on it. The way the whole deal ended up being for me is that I basically paid about the same amount I would have paid if I bought the CLS brand new last year. If you want more details let me know. Good luck, I hope you pull the trigger and get the CLS too

man im so pissed first they changed all the brakes, then the front two tires, then again one of the front 2, then they scratched both front wheels and now they are fixing them and im waiting

after my 2 AMG kompressor engines.. I would say.. the 63 in any form..

E , CLS or new C63 would be my next AMG.

I trade down torque, but smoother linear pull and more refined engine.

55's are great.. but they are a bit rough around the edges.

I test drove the CLS 63 at the dealership a couple of months ago. That thing sounded great and I love the looks. My only complaint was that the back seat was not designed for anyone over 5'11". I'm 6-1 and my head hit the roof.

Still loved it.

Great...another case of dealership collateral damage. If your wheels are not perfect when you get the car back have them get you new ones.

I've thought about doing this myself because I love the looks of the CLS and the better braking and handling would be nice. Enjoy!

i would have kept the E, CLS is just not my taste at all, i thought it'd grow on me but the more i see it the more i don't like it.
not saying is not a great car, the looks just don't do it for me.
whatever makes YOU happy is what counts, enjoy the new beast

Nice ride , the only thing I can say about the CLS is that the back seat is really for kids. It's way to small for adults. If that is all your going to use the back seat for, than I would say you are set.

Echo'ing the comments here - I almost bought CLS55 new, but being 6'5" the back seat was really worthless for me - less headroom than my S4 which is the same size as a C-Class. If I wanted no backseat I would have gone with the SL...

Well, I decided to pass. For now. Here's why:

CLS55's are going for high 70's/low 80's. E55's are going for 10-20k less. This leads me to think that the time to buy the CLS55 is in another six or eight months. By that time they will have depreciated a fair bit more. My guess is that it will drop relative to my '05 E55 value. So I'll keep the E for another six months and trade it in when I have six months and 5k miles left on the warranty. Hopefully by then I'll find a CLS55 for closer to sixty something instead of nearly eighty...

Anyone agree with this logic/guess?

I bought my CPO'ed CLS55 in Jan. this year for $77K with 7K miles. Per your research, 6 months later the range is still in the high 70's, I would wonder how much lower it would go in another 6 months.

I honestly would think that CLS55's in low to mid 10K miles range would be in the low 70's by now...

Wow! My guess is that you are particularly good at finding deals. Here's a 2006 with _34k_ on the clock, and they are inviting deals at $74k! Mind you MB of Oakland are insane with their pricing, but this gives you an idea of what's out there. Any tips as to where to look in the SF Bay Area for a deal? If you paid $77k six months ago, with only 7k miles...
