Has anybody dealt with "Level Ten" transmissions?

One of my friends referred me to Level 10 because he said they built him a great tranny for his modded Audi. I contacted them and they said they can build my tranny to ride smooth on light throttle and progressively shift harder with throttle application. This is what I was told:

HELLO AHMAD,
WE HAVE A PERFORMANC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM THAT WILL GIVE YOU QUICKER MORE POSITIVE SHIFTS, AS WELL AS 25% MORE HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE AT A LOWER RPM.THIS SYSTEM IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR VEHICLE AND IT’S MODIFICATION’S, AND IS THROTTLE RESPONSIVE. PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT YOUR ESTIMATED HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE ARE, AND ALL MODIFICATION’S, SO THAT WE MAY SET UP THE RIGHT COMBINATION FOR YOUR CAR.

Level 10 got famous building nasty auto Supra transmissions. They have a solid rep and do great work making slushboxes solid.

Ok, so its $3698 with a core charge of $1000 for the "perfomance transmission system" http://www.levelten.com/pts.htm and an additional $1298 with a core charge of $1000 for the billet torque converter.

A little too much if you ask me. Maybe if I had a messed up tranny I would go that route. I have heard nothing but good things about them from several people though so if you have $$$ this may be a good route

They have a pretty good reputation with the 300Z/350Z/Maxima community too.

My brother used them when he had his supercharged Maxima and was very happy.

How much do you think this would cut 1/4mile times by? They say their trannys are bulletproof and increase low end hp/tq by 25% That should equate to a nice reduction in 1/4 mile times. Plus my car feels like it shifts too slow, maybe this will cut that time as well.

Pat Barrett at Level 10 is one of the best guys around. He's been building trannys forever&has a solid reputation. He did a C6 for me when I had a 500hp '71 Mustang Mach 1&it was bullett proof.I pass his shop when I head to the dragstrip&he always has nasty cars in the parking lot

How much did it cut the 1/4 time for you and was the shifting harsh?

It's been a few years (late 90s/early 2000s)), but Level 10 attempted to build several 700R4/4L60/4L60Es for a couple of people I know personally and could not get them to hold even moderate power levels.

YMMV, etc.

As far as a tranny improving your times, you can improve shift speed, but your biggest improvement will be with a better/looser tq converter. What stall speed are they talking about for your car? Do you know if there will be any ECU issues with a looser converter - ie. ECU thinks tranny is slipping because car is in gear/engine revving/car not moving?

I restored the car from a basket case,so I never did any "before" runs with it.It was set up for street/strip&shifted with authority. It would chirp 1st,2nd&3rd gears when shifted at full throttle.I forget what stall speed the converter was, this project was started&finished 18yrs ago.
I sold it to a kid that I knew,he sprayed it&the car ran 10.20's.Not bad for 1990,as stock Corvettes,Mustangs&IROC Z's were in the high 13-mid 14's in the 1/4.And the fastest stock open class bikes were only running high 10's@130+mph

horsepower at the wheels can only be increased by improvements in efficiency, and aren't going to amount to anything like 25% increase. That would only work with a very inefficient current transmission...20% current loss or worse.

Unless you move up the engine rpm curve, but that doesn't sound like what they're saying...I'd question this claim vigorously

Sounds like they are lowering the design stall speed while increasing the torque multiplication. This is often considered "impossible" in the automotive circles, but every guy that modifies a turbodiesel pickup truck (+1000 lb-ft) knows that this is possible, and necessary, through tweaking the impeller design. My prediction is that the car would punch harder out of the hole, assuming the tires could hookup.

Lowering the stall speed of the torque convertor, i.e. making it tighter, improves shift responsiveness regardless of what is done to the actual transmission or tranny fluid.

The above two points above are in consideration that the engine torque remains constant. As mods push the engine torque up, the torque convertor will slip more and to a higher stall speed if it is not modified in consideration of the increased torque output. If the torque convertor is not modified and the engine torque goes up, one is leaving torque on the table because the convertor slips too much.

The transmission work would be to get things to hold up under the increased low RPM load.

I had Level 10 rebuild one for my 6 liter V12 w/ NOS in my 1991 BMW 850... long rebuild project... that tranny shifts like monster, and has been for 6 years now. Very good place, worth the extra coin.

If our 55 trannies weren't touted as so robust, I would have sent them mine by now.

So what would happen if I changed just the torque converter?

They are one of the best around, slush box masters, the converter is whats going to bring your times down but i dont know if this will effect or even break the rear since your going to leave alotttttttttt harder now.

I had the slow pig of all Saleens - a 96 281 automatic convertible. Not only that, it was the first year that the 4.6 motor was used in the Mustang so no one made performance parts for it. Now there's stuff all over the place but at that time it took sooo much $$ to get that car into the 12's lol

I bet that was a slug lol. I had a 5 speed 96 S281 Speedster. Fun daily driver for a while, but not even close to my S351R speedster lol.

They claim a whole second off my 1/4 time with the whole package!
"HELLO AHMAD,

YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO SHAVING A SOLID SECOND OFF YOUR ¼ TIME. IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO JUST THE CONVERTER, YOU MUST ALSO DO THE HYDROSYSTEM.WE WOULD HOWEVER HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DO THE WHOLE TRANS, TO COMPLETE THE COMBINATION. THIS WILL GAIN YOU THE MOST PERFORMANCE AND DRIVEABILITY."

I am sure I will do the torque converter but they are recommending the full "bulletproof" transmission build along with that or at least their "hydrosystem". The price they quoted me is kinda high and I'm unsure what to do. What do you guys think?

Would anybody be interested in putting together a group buy?
