Should I be able to beat new GTO??
Hi,
New owner here of w211 E55. Mine is an 03'. I used to have a C5 Z06 and from everything I read, the E55 should be as fast, or faster than my Z.......but it doesn't quote feel like it. Then again the cars are so different in every way that its hard to compare. The Seat of pants feeling is totally different.
I just got in a race from about 10mph to about 60mph with a new GTO and it was pretty much a dead heat.
I would figure the E55 would pull pretty easily. I'm wondering if my car is light on power or something. It has about 60k on the odo so who knows.
Any thoughts? I bring it in tomorrow for service B.

My thoughts exactly.....What power loss problems are typical with these cars? Any idea? I will let the shop know tomorrow when I take it in that the car may be losing power. I will report back to the board with what they say or find.

Main thing is intercooler pumps go bad.

There should be a FAQ sticky at the top for newbies and others to read about technical stuff,ic pumps etc. Here that mods.

the obvious or common problem is i/c pump failure. total failure leads to dramatic power loss from s/c shutdown and getting walked by a gto. an intermettant pump failure may not cause s/c shutdown but it will cause iat's to raise to the point that the ecu starts pulling timing and dumping fuel...therefor limiting enough power to not kill a gto. the not so obvious problem and the problem mb refuses to admit to is the loss of power from the ecu reflash associated with the secondary air injection pump recall. this will also cause you to only be able to hang with a gto.
dyno and data logging documentation are a must and easily worth the $300 out of pocket ($100 for the dyno time and $200 for a data logger).

You should smoke GTO. However, if for some reason your car had shifted to second and did not downshift, then I can see why you didn't fair well. I've been stuck in second at exactly the wrong speed and have had difficulty beating cars considerably slower than my E55.

Maybe you could try the computer reset trick...

the e55 have a harder time from a slow rolls.. its looses traction if you go WOT.
probably from a stop it would be different outcome.
also a race to 60 does really mean anything.. its about reaction time.
If you were a .5 second late hitting it... it will take more than 60mph to catch up.
that is one reason I really don't race unless is a good race for me and the opponent
1) from a dig (fair and square)
2) from a roll on the freeway with room to strech the legs.
other than that.. it too hard to figure out who won.

+1. Absolutely destroyed a GTO from a 20 mph roll. Of course, my car is a K1, but it wouldn't have changed the outcome at all if I was still stock. Too many cars to give an accurate count up to about 85-90 mph. Being an '03, the pump is certainly suspect if it has never been changed.

I ran both C5 Z06 & '06 GTO,posted in kill section awile back.GTO had loud exhaust&who knows what else.It was no contest in my 63.In your 55 the outcome would be the same.Check your I/C pump like everyone else said

StevesAMG, as others have pointed out your car should be considerably faster if both cars were stock. Given your seat of the pants feeling it makes a lot of sense to take a close look at your car, particularly the IC pump as multiple people have suggested.
However keep in the back of your mind that the other guy might not have been stock. It's almost ridiculously cheap and relatively easy to tune a GM LSx engine to reach high horsepower levels. With modified cams and heads a naturally aspirated LSx can make 500-600 HP. There are twin-turbo GTOs out there pushing 750 to 800 HP and if you run into one of them there's nothing to do but smile and wave. Maybe that and open your windows so he can admire your nicer interior.
