Pinging

There seems to be a slight pinging when accelerating at slow speeds during local driving. I always use 93 octane (was once blindsided by 92 octane premium). I have never had this issue with any other cars I have driven. I have the oil consumption problem that I am closely monitoring. Are these engines that sensitive?

Don't let it go untreated Joe, especially if you're buying/keeping the car. I would notify the dealer and ask them to listen to it immediately.

I had this and attributed to getting regular when i was filled by the premium 93 octane pump (at Gulf). I will use Gulf but never go back to that station again. It did exactly what you describe. Never happened again but I'm sure it wouldn't happen with 92.

How much oil do your 63 consume?

It is odd that these motors are so sensitive to octane.

Don't you think he got bad gas? I can't believe it would happen with 92 or 91 for that matter. It is good to know that MB isn't leaving much power on the table.

The reason I believe it was bad gas is that modern electronics wouldn't allow it. Then again, something could be wrong with the programming, software, etc.

I had the same problem with two tanks of gas in upper NY state over the past several weeks. The problem seemed to have cleared up once back in DC. I attributed it to bad gas as I always load up with 93 octane.

Regarding oil consumption, I now have 10,000 miles on my E63 and it seem to burn 1 liter per 2500 miles. The "check Oil" indication comes on like clockwork and have been advised that this is normal, as as expected for these engines.

It makes me wonder about the ECU tunes that are out. Are they getting pings? It just seems odd that MB would tune so precisely that a bad batch of premium would do that. But then again, it is a high compression...

It could be perfectly tuned but if you get 87 octane on a thorougbred engine you will get pinging. Some gas station owners really screw around to make more bucks.

This is why I'm really picky about where I buy my gas. Putting regular into a motor designed for premium can cause this whether it's an AMG or an Acura...
