Are dealers responsible for items stolen when your car is in service?

Im a bit pissed had my car in the dealer Friday where a factory MB tech worked on the car. I was told they have Germans from the factory in the US for 2 years and they assist a network of dealers on hard to solve issues.

My best friend came back from France Thursday, we had breakfast prior to me dropping my car off Friday and he dropped some EURO in my car, 80 to be exact. I was in a rush and stuffed it in my ashtray and planned to give it back later that day.

Pick the car up and my USD are in my ashtray but the EURO are gone and I now owe my friend over 100USD to replace this. Called the dealer and left a message 5 minutes after pickup no response

Curious has this every happend before? its obvious the German tech took the money because why didnt they take the other cash i had?

What responsibility do they have? Anything I can do about this? I feel like i left my car in a NYC parking garage and even then i never had an issue with stolen CD, cash, coins, phone charger etc, why at my Mercedes dealer?

that would be hard to prove. But you have to ask. Someone stole my Oakley sunglasses from my Benz once while in service. The Service Manager told me to buy a new pair and give him the receipt. He paid me back.

I think it is all up to the dealership on what they would do. I don't think you have a legal leg to stand on, but they may appease you for the sake of customer service?

If you leave cash in your car I would bet 9 times out of 10 it will be gone (when taking your car to service). Its too easy to steal and too hard to truly prove it was left there. Most dealerships have policy in place to allow for customer claims like stolen CD's, Sunglasses, etc. so plead your case and see what happens.

When I take my car in for service, I remove the V1 and CD's before hand. I cant remove the Subwoofer box that easily but I always make it a point to show that its in the trunk to my SA before he tags the car in for service.

I see fine print from my purchasing dealer on their service invoice that they are not responsible, so i guess this gives everyone to right to be a cleptomaniac.

I for one dont get stealers of coins too easy to loose and wont get you much these days on the street.

What gets me is that i had more expensive stuff in the car, sunglasses, more cash in the ashtray, and seatbacks and 50+ Cd's and a pair of new Ferragamo shoes $790 in the box in the trunk in my ovenight bag. I guess he wasnt a size 11 but Ebay would have made him some score.

Oh well next time i will have to clean everything out but i hate doing that because i always misplace things and loose stuff in the loaner cars like my Ezpass, security gate opener etc.

Sad to hear others have suffered from this as well.

Drives Slowly
I often leave $20-$30 in my car and I have never lost a penny. I guess I leave it there to test the integrity of the people handling my car. If I pick my car up and it's missing...............well, it's time to find a new dealership.

i had to file a police report against my last dealer. they played dumb but needless to say, my items mysteriously surfaced after the police detective showed up.

btw, mbusa could care less about the problem and said "it was up their 'independent' dealerships to correct their own problems".

dont just walk away from this b/c your invoice says that BS. call, or write a formal letter to the owner of the dealership and cc MB USA. when u buy a 100k car and leave it at the dealer for service, you arent supposed to go through the whole damn car to make sure you're not leaving something that can get stolen.

btw this is if you're 100% certain you left 80euro in the car.. perhaps you were drunk & blew it at the stripclub the night b4..??

I am so effing sick of hearing from MBUSA that their "dealers are independently owned blah blah blah." Don't they give a flying f how their retail outlets are representing their brand and treating their customers? Oh wait, MBUSA doesn't care considering that most dealerships suck.

It seems to me that they should make more of an effort to encourage good customer service since a single dealership can spoil countless customers' perceptions of the entire brand for life.

They stole about $10 worth of quarters from my grandpa's E-class as well as some old Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra, Loui Prima, and other old italian CD's lol. They didn't do anything about it. I hate MB service.

I've heard this called "the stupid tax".
It's not called that because the tax is stupid.

Since when do you leave valuables in the hands of people you don't know and therefore can't trust?

I take everything out of my car before service. If I leave anything in plain view, I expect that it will be gone.

I am sorry to hear about your situation, but I don't think you have a leg to stand on in this case.

Luckily i've never had anything stolen from my car at the dealeship. I would go directly to the service manager & let him know about the situation.

I think it's disgusting that we have to think that stuff might be gone out of our car. Fortunately I've never had that happen, I even leave my Magellan nav system in the car.

If anything was stolen out of my car and they refused to pay for it, well that's when I would call American Express and refuse the charge for the service. Maybe then they would be a little more co-operative.
