New Engine or New Car?
Some of you may know that I have posted about excess oil consumption on my E63 in the past. Needless to say the problems still persists where the oil warning occurs every 1500 miles. Right on time it happened again at 7500 miles. MB service would not even consider looking at the problem until 6500 miles after which an oil consumption test will be run. This consists of draining the existing oil and refilling to a set level and then weighing it. The car is then given back to me to drive and if (when) the warning comes back another weight check is done before MB service can pick the engine apart for problems. Needless to say a complete waste of time in my book. Should there be an obvious problem visibile to the naked eye then the problem will be fixed on the spot.
If the problem is not obvious the engine is shipped back to AMG and a new engine put in its place. This does not sit well with me. A lemon engine?
Anyway, this is a leased car and I really don't like the fact that the car will have a complete engine replacement. I would rather have a new car, not necessarily an AMG at this point. I will discuss that option if and when the time comes with MB.
Has anyone had similar issues? What course of action would you think is appropriate?

i have the same prob.
all they did is top the oil off for me and set me on my way
they eat up oil u have to refill it every 2000 miles
deal with it. stop crying

If you owned the car I would demand a new car. What would the value of it be with an engine replaced? Since it's leased I wouldn't worry so much. Drive it, turn it in, and walk away.

Crying?!?!? No. But at $1280/month I expect something better. You say you have the same issue? I had cars for many years without this problem. So I have a right to be concerned.

Also regarding the possibility of taking the position of just adding oil every 1500 miles or so, what if there is a more serious underlying problem that manifests itself later on? Simply standing idle just because it is leased is not a wise thing, especially if MB is aware of the issues I am having.
FYI ... I am hoping that the problem could be corrected without engine replacement. I just spoke to my salesman who somehow stated that they would do a swap of a car into the current lease. It could be another E63 or other car .. possibly a CLS 550. I would have no issues going to a 550.

Something is definately wrong !!!!!!
I have 4,000 miles on my car and I took it to the track 3 times and so far no problems what so ever. I never got any "low oil" warning message. I checked my oil levels and everything was fine.
If you do swap cars, don't go to a 550; stay with AMG. There is a big difference in power and driveability. Don't let one incident scare you away.

Crying, not yes, but hell yes. I have a 06 S65 that I paid 180k for. At 1200 miles the add oil light came on. MB added oil and sent me on my way. It happen again at 2,500, 4,500, 6,000, 8,000, 11,000, and 13k. MB has done oil consumption test that said YES it is consuming to much oil, but they call it normal(bull----). The local MB tech said it was not normal. They just test it agian and found that 4 cyclinders are consuming major amounts of oil. So I am trying to get them to give me a credit towards the purchase of a new S65. It is not normal and they should take car of yours also, that is what is right!!!!! Not sure about you, but no one at MB said I would need to add oil to my car every 2k miles before I bought it. I have put my lawyer on it, MB is not being very helpful so I had no other choice. So I think you should get a new car so your problems will be gone and you can enjoy your great car. Good-Luck-Joe

These two cases are unbelievable. They have to either fix the car or get new exgine or put you in another car at no cost. Slap a lawsuit on them and do a local press release with the name of the dealership. Watch how fast they offer to fix your car.

How many quarts between the light coming on? I monitor my consumption with the engineering menu on the cluster because it gives me the level to a tenth of a quart. For consistency, only check it in the morning. You should do that for a while and see what you use over 500 miles or so.

If your car is burning that much oil, it's got to go somewhere. On the 65, you're blowing it out the exhaust and through the turbos. On the 63 and 65, that oil has to make it out the exhaust, through the catalytic converters and finally, some of it makes it into the atmosphere.
If the Mercedes is blowing smoke up your *** regarding consumption, take your car to your local emissions station and have them do a sniffer test on it. If your new car does not pass, the dealer is on the hook to fix it. Emissions equipment is covered by a longer warranty than other components. I'm sure the EPA would be interested to see that Mercedes sniffs/certifies tight engines, but sells 2 strokes to the public
FWIW, I would not hesitate to have the dealer replace the engine in my car. I would prefer that route vs. a rebuild.
As an aside, your car will run poorly with all that oil making it into the chambers. It will make your car prone to detonation, thereby reducing power when the ECU detects it.

I can honestly say that I would not tolerate what appears to be a blatant problem that needs to be fixed. There is no way you should need to add oil to a new car every 1500-2000 miles...and I am SURE it does not mention that in the manual or BMW would be using that against MB in their commercials.

High performance and high revving engines are designed to consume a little oil. Owners of performance cars have always dealt with this. Low oil consumption is an advantage of lower revving, less stressed engines like traditional MB power plants. The convergence of MB owners and AMG designs is clearly causing customer satisfaction problems. I guarantee you that a hard-driven M anything or Porsche consumes as much oil.

Emissions limits are generally measured in tenths or hundredths of grams/mile. Your .00027 ounce/second would be .008 grams/second. Multiply that by 60 and it's conceivable that it would show up on an emissions test (increased HC and ???). Also, pushing all that oil out through the exhaust will result in reduced converter efficiency and life. In 2000 miles, pushing a quart of oil out of the exhaust is a LOT. That oil will coat the plugs and combustion chambers, resulting in reduced performance. That doesn't even take into account the increased tendancy for knock events I mentioned above.
I've built engines with forged slugs that did not burn 1 qt every 2000 miles. I'm in the midst of a twin turbo build on one of my cars and I expect it to use < 1 qt every 2000 miles. It will make over 700hp and 700ftlbs at the tire.
I don't expect a new Mercedes, BMW, Porsche or any other modern vehicle to use that much oil.

I'd be pissed too...if I'm paying a lease payment on a car that I won't have for a couple of weeks while the engine is being replaced AND (if I know MB dealers) driving around in a rental...
I'd make them pay my lease payment while you don't have the car and the rental...I hope you get some satisfaction.

My C32 at 139K miles, running 19 psi for 129K of them consumes, half a quart in 10K miles.
63s so far have been all over the road. Most are around 1 quart per 10K miles, but there is a significant number that is around 1K to 2K miles per quart. AMG has been replacing the engines so far, so at this time I do not know the source of the problem.

I certainly respect your experience, but I've never heard of a 65 owner with anything like that consumption. What's more, before I bought my S65 I asked my SA about their reliability. He told me that that they seemed pretty solid now, certainly compared with the early V12s, but they burned oil and that bothered some of his customers. He said a quart per 2,000 miles was typical. So I went into this informed and am not bothered by it at all. The velcro strap in the trunk is just the right size for a quart of Mobil 1.
I do think this amount of oil is unlikely to cause detonation. Worn engines that fail smog checks usually burn something like a quart per 200.
Anyway, if you or anybody else has seen a 65 engine that goes between oil changes without being topped up, I'd love to hear about it. BTW, an AMG tech over at the Private Lounge confirmed this is by design. If I started getting zero oil consumption I think I'd worry about my piston oil spray injectors being clogged.

My SL65, and to some extent the E55's, had the repeated blue cloud of smoke after two cold start in a row. This indicates an oil consumption issue that is designed in. It reminds me of the dreaded Piston Slap in GM Vortec engines. I still have my 2001 Yukon with over 200K miles on it's 8.1 Liter that burns a quart per 1000 miles and sounds like a diesel on start up. Maybe oil consumption is good for the engine?

Thank you all for your info on my S65 oil consumption issue. Just for the recored I paid cash for my car not a lease, now I wish I did. I am buring approx. 2 quarts of oil every 1500 to 2500 miles!!!! That can not be normal???? I spoke with the MB Tech today when dropping my car off and he admited that it needs new rings and cyc. Sorry I am not a tech- person at all, so I am not up on tech terms. But I am a sales person, and I was never told the car would burn oil like that. I am sticking to my guns and going to fight this one out. Replace the engine would kill resale value, not that all the problems so far are helping!!!!! MB needs to make it right!!!!! But, thanks again for all the feedback, I look forward to more. I will give an update as soon as I hear from MB.
