No Fans on a Dyno

OK, so I got my car redynoed today after getting new software from RennTech. The shop I went to didnt have any cooling fans!! By the time I realized, it was too late.

So my dyno was at 430 or so RWHP, and my previous dyno at a different shop was at 455 or so. Just for kicks, I paid for another pull, and it was live 10HP less, and the curve was lower all around.

So my question is, is it possible to lose that much power from a lack of airflow? The car was doing 4th gear pulls, so it should have been going at least 150+ mph, but no airflow to the heat exchanger.

Should I just give up on these dynos and just get a data logger to see how timing and iat's on the street are?

you got 455 stock???
if not what mods did you have ?.
and yes air is important!
try ruining VERY FAST with out breathing then do it again for kicks after the first run.
So yes i think no fan = bad :-/

Oops,I forgot to mention that the car isnt stock. It has RennTech pulley and software, eisenmann race exhaust, and VRP airbox.

would having no fan cause 30 HP drop? I was hoping to be in the 460s with the new software which leaned out the top end some

Im suprised you did not lose more than 10 hp.. Definately needs a fan blowing to mimic driving , a BIG FAN! Dyno's seem to really be hit and miss with AMG's the engine really heats up and sucks power. Ambient condition as you know also could be why you hit 430 vs 450. That could happen just for a 10 degree diff in outside temps and or lower barometer.

I doubt you can find a real dyno shop where your located or in the USA where they have a dedicated room with no $50 fans blowing. The most sophsticated dyno facilities I ever come across was on my trip to Germany, Hammans dyno set up is one of the best, they have a MAHA and they told me the fans for the proper CFM in the room cost 79,000EURO themselves.

Now do you think someone in the USA has invested this much in a dyno facility? Most of these shops do lots of easy tuning for Turbo cars and air isnt as critical when they have massive intercoolers etc but on a normally aspirated engine and even these blown 55 its hard to get a good result.

Also the dyno is a tuning aid for shops, if your looking for the max numbers then you will be hard pressed with the varience from shop to shop.

I learned all this years back the hard way.

There is a shop in Manassas VA thats called P tuning and they have their dyno in an isolated room (2400whp AWD dyno). I've never used them though, mostly import work

No fans, hood down will cause skyrocketing underhood/intake temps.

ECU compensates by dumping fuel to cool down, killing power and A/F.

Very few dynos can replicate the airflow seen at highway speeds.

so I probably didnt lose power because of the tune, I lost power because the stupid shop couldnt shell out a $50 fan?

I just want to make sure I didnt give up power with the new software.

I forgot to attach a picture of the run

Real Cars
Guys,

GET YOUR CARS DYNOD BY SHOPS THAT DO MBs!

It seems like there is a post every week from guys who take their cars to any old Dyno and then have a complaint. I feel for you guys, but dynoing these cars is not like dynoing any old car. You need to be setup, you need to know what you are doing, and it really helps to have other 55 dyno sheets in case something is wrong!

Make the extra effort/trip/etc and hit the dynos who know how to do it right.

Your A/F looks good to me. Def not because of the tune.

When I dynoed mine they had the hood up and a huge fan just front of the bumper.

that P tuning shop posted has a dyno dynamics, people on this board gave mixed feelings, also do you see any fans or blowers?

Hamanns shop was just unreal I have to see if my brother has photos saved from last year I would like to post. In front of the rolling road the entire wall is a huge blower/fan from the floor to ceiling. I never saw something like this in my life. In the rear it has two huge mobile units and the floor had a motorized trap door for all exhaust fumes and stuff, very sophisticated. When i was there they had a Gallardo on the MAHA and they even removed the rear bumper and decklid.

In the US its hit or miss thats why I dont bother anymore. Dynos are good for live tuning other than that its a gamble and the customer is always dissapointed.

Can't really tell from that dyno run. It does look like the dump came at about 6K rPMs, so maybe they were able to lean up the top end. No pre ECU dyno? Your Pulley alone is worth the 40hp you are seeing. Oh well, at least you have the patience to let Creative and RennTech continue to experiment with your car. I say get a partial refund and just have them take the speed limiter off.

Hi phatmitzu,

Logic is in anaheim. Right off the 91 fwy. They have a brand new 1200hp mustang dyno. Im with the owner right now. He say its capable of doing 1/4 runs on the actual dyno. It has christmas tree, and you get a timeslip accurate within 1 tenth!!

Didnt mean to hijack. BTW I think fans are important to keep the car cool and consistent because there is a lack of airflow on the dyno. 455 does sound very high for stock 55.

Regards,
Steve

455 is probably high for a stock car....but my car isnt stock.

I might have to look into the Logic shop. Mustang dynos usually produce different numbers though right?? Do they have adequate cooling fans?
