Dyno results

Finally had an opportunity to strap my bone stock '05 onto a Dynojet this morning. Run was done in dyno mode, 4th gear. Do these results look about right?

The cooler weather seems to produce better 1/4 mile times and dyno results. Its also easy to feel the difference without any tests.

Yeah, cooler is better. Temperature was 72 at time dyno was run. Still, I was pleased with results given stock condition of car.

Your HP looks spot on with a healthy 55 but your TQ seems awefully high
I dynoed at 426 hp / 476 tq

That's warmer than I was thinking. The torque looks high to me also. Are you sure the ECU has not been modified (are you the original owner?). I would be very happy with those numbers especially if the car is stock.

That chart looks pretty good for stock E55 , I think they normally average 400 to 410 whp, so yours is definately on the healthy side

HP looks good, but the TQ number seems a little high.

I'm not the original owner (I purchased it as a CPO car), but the car is indeed stock thus far. In fact, I was the recipient of the MB factory service ECU reflash campaign when my car was in for scheduled service earlier this year (they didn't ask me; they just did it and I noticed it on the service invoice). I was actually pleased to see that the reflash hadn't killed my power.

As for the torque, I have no explanation other than noting it was pretty consistent for all three pulls we did.

Finally, I can say that having the car on the dyno and just flooring it and letting it accelerate up to where the speed limited kicked in at around 160mph is most definitely the hardest the engine has been pushed during my ownership of the car. I'm amazed with the car more than ever now.

In 4th gear, the speed limiter kicks in well before you approach 6,500 rpm. On the graph, you can see where the limiter did its magic. Both HP and torique would be dropping off at that engine speed in any event.

thanks
.. didn't know max power depends on the gear you are in

It doesn't. In fact, according the MB's published ratings, peak HP is at 6,100 rpm, while max torque is supposed to be at 2,650 rpm, so it's clear that the top speed limiter cut in before my engine reached peak HP.

What this suggests is the need to do the dyno runs in 3rd gear so that the engine speed can get up to over 6,100 rpm.

Anyone have any thoughts on the relative merits of doing 3rd gear pulls versus 4th gear pulls? I assumed that since 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio, it was best to use, but it's clear that the top speed limiter kicks in in fourth gear before the engine can reach its peak HP engine speed of 6,100.

Once you start modding, then torque and HP peaks will occur at rpms other than the published engine specs.

Those are some very strong stock numbers, especially tq, very very high for stock. Good job.

Sorry, don't catch the reasoning ..perhaps because here's very late now
but in my mind if you can't reach 6100 rpm because of the speed limiter in fourth gear (or whatelse reason), this means either that you didn't reach your real max power, or that the engine is no more stock and its max power is no more at, say 6100rpm but at 5600

Further 1:1 gear ratio in 4th, needs in any case to be multiplied by 2.65

If you can, you should take this car to the track and see what kind of trap speed you get. I would think you would do very well.
