Changing Limited Slip Differential Oil in E63 P30

Buy the oil. Castrol SAF-XJ. Bring a container to a BMW dealer and get 2 liters. It is 66% cheaper than bying it at a Mercedes dealership.

You must have a 14mm allen wrench or socket. I tried a bolt with a 14m head and a vise grip and managed to destroy the bolt, but nothing else moved. The plugs are in VERY VERY TIGHT.

I jacked up the rear left at the jack point with a floor jack so I could slide under the car. The drain plug is on the right, so this was the best way to go.

Once the oil is drained and the plug is replaced, I snaked a 3/8 PET (like used on a connection to an ice maker) hose over the rear left tire, under the car and into the fill point. I wish it had been larger diameter because it was slow. I had a funnel connected to the hose and I poured the oil there.

Once the diff was full, I dropped the car and let the oil drain from the top plug to get the oil level right. Then jacked up the car and put in the fill plug.

The most diffiecult thing by far was getting out the drain and fill plugs.

The oil was the same color as my car. Flint Grey Metallic. I should have done this at 2000mi, but I did it at 2900. This is one service you will not find in FSS. I have enough gear lube to change the oil one more time. Maybe.

Why didn't you just take the car into the dealer and have them service the LSD?

It is a mandatory service that they perform under warranty for you..... Then you don't have to worry about procuring the fluid yourself

Isn't the service required around 1800 miles?

Just had the fluid changed on my G55.

My dealer does not include any required maintenance. I would pay for all oil changes, regardless if it is required after 1,875miles or 10,000miles, or if it is differential oil or engine oil.

I did not purchase pre-payed maintenance.

To be honest, after spending the money on the car there is not a lot left to pay the ridiculous prices the dealer charges,

Huh?

Now I am confused.

Regular scheduled maint has not been included for some time BUT dealers do a 1000 mile check up free of charge and the Differential service on 030 Performance package cars, SL65's and G55's. (I have two of the three) is included free of charge by Mercedes.

If your dealer told you something different, you need to chat with Mercedes. It is covered as a preventative maint issue specifically for locking differentials.

Your dealer offeres a pre-paid maint option? I bet that is a killer..... Mercedes does not offer this to my knowledge so it must be dealer specific.

What dealer do you use so we can avoid them?

I just had the LSD fluid changed on my 63 Black by the Dealer. It is stated in my owners manual that is part of the free 1000 mile check up. I'd relook in yours.

So I have a lot of people tell me the dealer changed this oil for free. I can find no mention of this oil anywhere in my owners manual.

There was the sticker on the windshield telling me to change it at 1875miles.
There was information on the oil type in the booklet telling me what oils and lubricatants to use. I should mention that in this booklet, it indicates that the Castrol 75W140 is the oil to be used in the E63 with Performance Package, but in the chart they fail to put a dot in the E-Class column.

I had asked a couple of MB dealers parts departments about it and the lack of this dot thew them off identifying the right oil.

Anyway, I have contacted my dealer and said "Hey, everyone is telling me you should have performed this service. Now I have gone and done it myself and I think you owe me a free A Service instead". I will see what they say.

As for posting the name of the dealer, I do not want to do that. The service dept might not be 100%, but the sales guy was great. He actually drove 40miles to pick me up in order to take delivery of my car at the dealership.

See the attachment. See the confustion for the E63 with Performance package. No Dot on E-Class

At least I KNOW I have the right oil

Looks like the manual is wrong. They certainly left out your dot.....

The good news is that you do have the right oil and it is the same on all LSD's.

Guess they forgot about the E63 Performance Package

This service I am talking about is unique to the limited slip differentials.

I do not know if your 05 E55 was available with a LSD. In fact, my understanding is that the "Performance Package" on the E63 was not available until later in 2007.

If you have a standard differential I would say you should consider using a good synthetic gear lube available from one of the synthetic manufacturers. After 30K miles, I would probably be itchy to change the oil particularly if I was a spirited driver.

The obvious query is why does it require the oil to be changed so early at 1875 miles?

The oil in the LSD has special breakin additives that need to be removed after 2000mi. I waited a little long. When the oil comes out it is metallic grey. The new oil is "wesson Oil" in color.

Jon2007E63P30, where (in the manual) does it say the oil needs to be changed in the 1st 2000 miles?

I have a 2007 E63 P30 as well and can't find anything on that?

You should have had an additional sticker on your windshield under the break-in instructions.

Says that your differential needs a service at 1850 miles.

This appears to be on all cars with a LSD. Did you not have it?

I had it, but never read it...... I took it off as soon as I got the car

Is it mentioned anywhere else in any of the documentation that came with the car?

I have looked all over, and the basic answer is NO.

There is the sticker on the windshield, which was explicit.
There is the chart with the typo in the post above.
The service manual has nothing.

THAT IS IT.

So in some ways, it makes sense that Mercedes might decide to make this a standard part of the free first visit. Of course, if like my dealer, they do not do this then you would be on your own.

But in general, I think Mercedes has done a poor job of documentation for our LSD based E Class. At my dealer, who had 14 E63s, one 2007 was a P30 and one 2008. It is not a common option, although that is no excuse to mess up on the documentation.

Update

My dealers service manager finally called back.

"The first service visit is not to be done on an E63 and there is no service interval on that. There are 3 models that require the differential fluid change; SL55 with 030 option, SL65, and CLS63. Those are the only ones that require a differential oil change. "

I left him a message that I hope was not too condesending. I told him about the sticker on windshield and that I had a 030 option and to call me once he has researched this issue.

If I do not get a call back, then I guess I need to call MBUSA.

My dealer had no issues changing my differential oil for free even though I have 7500 miles on the car

I just called the service advisor and told him, you guys forgot to change my differential oil in the first 2,000 miles free service, which is required via the "break-in" sticker. He took the car in and changed it with no problems.

So in the E63, we're not supposed to change the differential oil

Yes we are DEFINITELY supposed to change out the gear lube.

The dealer does not know what he is talking about, and that is pissing me off.

Time to call MBUSA.

Very confusing thread. I had an 07 E63 and they never changed out the differential fluid. However, they are now requiring the oil to be changed on my 2009 E63 at 2,000 miles. Has anyone had this done on their new 09 E63? I assume the service should be free??

This is supposed to be only for P30 optioned cars or cars (optionally) equipped with the AMG LSD.
