Is your E55 engine loud?

I been noticing my 55's engine is getting louder and louder mostly when it's hot. It makes a ticking sound, is this normal? I don't feel any power lost or anything funny when the engine is ticking, the engine sound like an older MB deisel engine from the 80's.

That could be a whole variety of things.

Could be you have one or more pulley bearings crapping out, could be your AC compressor starting to crap out, could be a defective catalytic converter, could be the supercharger clutch, or it could be noisy lifters.

If it's noisy lifters, then you're not changing your oil often enough and the sludge is affecting your viscosity or plugging up some of the smaller channels. Forget the stupid 9k mi oil changes, do it every 3k-5k even with full synthetic. You can also have a detergent treatment run which usually helps.

For the other possibilities, the dealer will need to diagnose and replace the broken part. No way to know what it is until you take it in and have it diagnosed.

Sounds like it's my lifters, will that be cover under warranty? It's much louder on the passanger's of the head. Sometimes I feel embrass when I ride client in the car, lot of times they ask me what's that noise. You can hear that loud lifters from inside the cabain.

If it's really that loud, then you're probably low on oil. Take it the dealer immediately. Any internal engine parts will be covered under your warranty, so you shouldn't have to worry there.

As a precaution, take a photo of your instrument cluster that shows that it gave you no "low oil" warning. Specifically, take a photo of the diagnostic screen showing 0 warnings. That way, if you have been running it low enough to cause that kind of a racket and there is permanent damage, they can't blame it on you and try to get out of the warranty claim.

But ya, take it in ASAP. A little lifter noise is annoying, but as much as you are describing has got to be something wrong.

Sometimes, the sound is just an exhaust recirculating valve tapping. It sounds louder on some days than others and can be mistaken for a lifter. It is normal.

Why don't you just take it to the dealer?

this engine is no Lexus V8...

with so many things working at once.. the engine makes all kind of noises compared to other regular engines.

I hear the ticking sound.. but my C32 does the same.

As long as I know I change my Oil on time and I have no codes.. no big deal.

just part of the package of owning a supercharged 469hp car stock.

This engine has never or going to be silky and smooth..
