I am a still recovering B5 S4 owner... loved that car to absolute death. I have a Silver 2001. Full AWE StageIII + intercoolers, 993TT brakes, the whole meal deal. Car had over $20k in mods and was just such a fantastic vehicle. You could throw any weather at it and it would just beg for more. I did not have any huge reliability problems just mostly maintenance. Sold it with 85k, still regret it.

I'm regreting I sold my 00 S4
Definitely go w. APR chip great gains and very reliable. I had mine chiped for 4yrs and never gave me any problems. Also look into getting the extra function where you can run it chiped or valet mode for stock mode.

I had a 2001 S4 Avant Imola Yellow. It had full AWE Stage3 and Full Stasis brake and suspension. I loved it to death. I was force to sell last month. I was trying to keep both S4 and E55. But i guess the E55 won me over. and I have not driven S4 since I purchase the E55 eraly this year.
. I never had any problem and I was the orginal owner.

I should of thought of an S4 before I got my landcruiser this fall for the winter. Oh well, my kids and dog love the size but it sure is slow as heck. The E55 has not seen rain, sleet, snow since :-)

don't do it! mod the benz
you don't want my winter beater kicking your butt for 1/10th the investment AND my daily doing the same... you better pick a battle
jk (well mostly), but please do be careful modding the audi... contrary to how this thread has gone, they REALLY aren't all that reliable when modded or otherwise. Look at how many S4s are for sale that have slight issues with the mods- "it's just a vac leak" or "needs tune" etc., you just know the owners have given up. I know keeping my non-turbo audi running cost more than mods for the benz this year. Obviously, they are a blast to drive and far more civilized (i doubt you'd want to drive my cloth interiored skunk2 coilover equipped subie for long( but it can get out of hand fast keeping it running right.

I saw a decent looking S4 the other day for 9.5K that was very clean and modded. I couldn't afford 2 older german cars as my MB keeps me plenty busy with mods and repairs
I can barely find time to do stuff on my C43 let alone another uberrocket.
I really wish preowned STI's were less money as beating on a 4wd subbie during the winter seems right and I would never feel bad.
besides, why on earth would I want to get rid of my AWD explorer sport that shuts itself off when I slam down the parking brake, or the one that has all four tires screaming when taking turns at 15mph or faster.![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

96 and 08 911 turbos
the reason those cars are that cheap around that mileage is that most will need new turbos (cracked exhaust housings on most all of them) and the timing belt hasn't been done.
I was considering one, but got my e class instead.

that and they will likely need all sorts or random electrical (cruise control stalk for an example)/cosmetic (door strips falling off lol) fixes as well-
I wouldn't go with ANY of the above btw- why not build your own package and have it tuned on a dyno... ? Save yourself literally a TON of funding and be faster in the end.

2001 Audi S4, Stage 3
No, he's right. There's actually a video of him destroying a stock E55 at some Dallas airfield event
Don't go with APR. Way too expensive for what you get. Go with VAST, ASP, EPL, or AWE. All cheaper and perform as well or better than APR. There's a guy in California who recently ran an 11.1 with his full weight K04 S4. Dave at EPL has installed some RS6 hybrid turbos on his S4 and is putting down around 550 horsepower to the wheels. The S4 is a 3600 lb. car so a lot lighter than the E55. The B5 S4 scene is getting exciting b/c new tuning/turbo packages are making them faster and faster.

What turbos are you talking about tuning on this car? I'll personally throw on K04s/42 lb injectors on my car and use Revo's Lemmiwinks program to alter my GIAC Stage I file to homebrew my own fueling file. If I had a lot of extra $, I probably wouldn't go this route. I'd get the block rebuilt and get GT28s or RS6 turbos put on there. You really can't tune your own car unless you're using K04 turbos. Lemmiwinks only allows you to change fueling parameters so much. If you go with anything bigger than a K04, you'd have to pay one of the few tuners in the country (that have cracked the ECU) to customize your tune. That is a lot of $ right there for a custom tune, not to mention the transport costs to get the car across the country. That's like saying, just do your own tuning for the W211 E55. I was personally recommending those tuners to Tommy25000 because from his posts, it doesn't sound like he does his own wrenching. He just wants to pay someone to install a known kit that will be safe and work great.
