All Detroit Diesel 2,3,4,6,8,12,16,20,24 cylinder engines in series 53,71,92,149 (40 to 3800 HP.) have gear driven superchargers, and number in the 10s of millions produced. The vast majority of S/C cars use a S/C (blower) that originated on a Detroit Diesel 6V71 or 8V71 engine. Here is one after market source.

All supercharged aircraft engines are gear driven. The coolest is the Merlin V12 it had a two speed, two stage, after-cooled supercharger. The part on the back of the engine is the S/C.

As far as longevity and reliability, gear drive will have a duty cycle far superior to any belt driven arrangement. Belts are a low cost means to drive accessories, and in our case the belt allows us to change the ratio, and overdrive our S/Cs. So to stay on topic, IMHO it is still OK to drive your S/C from the inside of your harmonic balancer (like Vrus & LET).

indeed, probably the crankshaft is much stronger than we think ... enough thinking at the kind of forces that airplane engines are subject to, because of the propeller ..
Maybe the delicate part in not crankshaft ... but our screw-type Lysholm Supercharger
![EEK!](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif)
more than 20.000 rpm.. on an extremely thin play coupling
ps: I was said info that, maybe because of running a non properly balanced pulley .. problems didn't arose with the crankshaft and its journals ... but with something in the S/C that went blown/burned ..
