Don't see these everyday
A friend of mine has quite a car collection. He had just done some work on this one and we took it out for a drive today. He also has a 1947 Bentley that looks like it rolled off the assembly line a few minutes ago. I will take some photos of it if anyone is interested. Anybody have any idea whet this 1958 300 SL is worth? It is in extremely good shape, inside, outside, and mechanically.

I totally agree. He said it is the convertible version of a Gull Wing. I don't know if that is accurate or not, but it is one fine vehicle. The value is not really important. It is not for sale and it probably never will be. I was impressed with the performance when we drove it today. It does have some respectable power, especially considering it is 50 years old.

That dont think that convert SL is worth anything close to $500k.
The coupe Gullwing though is in pristine cond.
Nice car none the less... the performance jump at the time was akin to what the Veyron has done today... if not more so.

58 300sl worth about 300k plus. if it was 62 with alloy engine and disc brakes it would be worth a lot more.

The convertibles are worth around $300k in good condition, maybe more if there is something special about the car (matching #s, celebrity owned, all-original, etc.).
The guy who said $500k is confusing this with the gullwing. Those are worth $500k+. Personally, I can't understand the disparity. there were 11,430 series 300s produced and only 700 were convertibles. The drop-tops are by FAR the more rare car, but nevertheless the gullwing has become the collectible. Go figure.
As an FYI, there is a silver gullwing on Ebay for $695k BuyItNow. That might be a good deal. There is also a convertible on Ebay for $625k BuyItNow, which is a hideous deal....hmmm....let's see....for an extra $50k I'll take the gullwing, thanks.
If you guys REALLY want to blow some dough and snag a "white whale" try finding a 1950s W196r...the original SLR. They built 9 of them, and wrecked one immediately at Le Mans, leaving 8. Mercedes Benz AG directly owns two that they take to car shows, and they had one in crates that they use for parts for the other two, so that leaves 5. Can't imagine what these must be worth.

I didn't say it was worth $500k. I said I saw a guy selling it for about that, fully restored. It was not a gull wing.

Production Numbers of the 300SL Roadster from February/May 1957 to February 1963
1957 554 units

Also the platforms of the 2 are slightly different. It is correct that the coupe and roadster were built on tubular frames but the roadsters frame was different in order for it to have normal doors.
