Just put Snows on my e63

Started snowing up here in NH on Monday, but it was only an 1 or 2 inches where I live. I was trying to postpone putting on my snows because I was driving to NY on Tuesday, and without snow on the roads I'd rather be wearing stock Conti's. So without snows, I pulled out of the parking garage into 1 inch of snow that had not been salted yet. Almost stuffed the car into the building across the street. Then I proceeded to slide down a hill only slightly higher than a molehill, saying "sh*t, sh*t, SH*T!!!" the whole way. Got stuck on flat ground, minor uphill, you get the picture. I slid over to NTB (they order rims and tires from TireRack for me, then take them off and put them on for free every year) And the tech got stuck in a parking spot on flat ground.

30 mins later, the car came out wearing moderately ugly MSW's and Dunlop Sport 3D's. Tech parked in the same spot. I pulled out without any wheelspin. The transformation is INCREDIBLE. The tires initially seemed to make some noise, so I took the tech out for a ride as well. He couldn't believe the improvement. The noise turned out to just be snow packing the sipes, goes away on dry ground. The car is a tank in the snow now- great turn in, stopping, hooks up fine. I drove to NY, hit some weather, and car was a champion. As a bonus, the tires are quiet on the highway and handle well in the dry. I think all of the Trac Electronics really make the most of the tires. Just my two cents.

Yeah nothing more exhilerating than having it snow while your max summer tires are on. I am certain the car would do moderately well in weather with the correct rubber :-).

Tires, Tires , Tires..

Sounds like fun

I had the same experience with my E55>
I got it home and tried to get out of the driveway with just an 1" of snow I couldn't do it!
I called tirerack and got the same wheel MSW and dunlop snows!
What a difference!

Do you have pics on the car? I just got the same package coming Monday after I almost wipped out today. My stock Contis are down to the limiters on the rear. Since its a good size I can use them for other cars in the future so its a good investment. I wanted the LM25 but all sold out I am sure the Dunlops should be more than adequate. I hope the car doesnt look silly

my E63 is black and almost got the MSW12 with the black inside the spokes but the photo on tirerack looks sort of funny I got bright silver.

John they look fine to me much better than other wheels the tire rack offers.

So you get some real snow and if you say this package is good I will 100% take your word on it.

I am wondering since the rears are narrow, I may try to pick up some H/R spacers. What do you guys think?

I just received my Blizzaks on inexpensive MSW wheels yesterday. We're moving to Iowa and I'm driving the E55 up there in about a week.

The UPS driver couldn't figure out why I'd ordered snow tires in Florida

Those tires stick like glue ! I couldn't believe the difference I got when I put them on!
Before that the ESP was working overtime and now I never see it blink!
This is a great winter beater!

I think you'll like the dunlops, my understanding is the blizzaks are better in the snow, the dunlops last longer and are decent in the snow but better in the dry, and since it is dry here 90% of the time, I went dunlop. Sorry, tried to upload pictures, but I'm lucky if I can turn this freakin' computer on half the time, couldn't figure it out.

I got three solid seasons on Blizzaks LM22's on my 540 and they still had plenty of tread. Great snow tire. I'm sure you'll be fine with the Dunlops. Amazing what a good set of snows can do.

FWIW to those who are on the fence, I decided when I bought my 55 that it was too great an investment for me to chance it in the snow. Not worried about my driving as much as the idiots all around me. Since Jeep dealers are giving their trucks away (0 down, 0 inception, $297/mo including taxes, etc.), I decided to just have a truck for less than perfect weather.

These tires aren't for the snow. Car becomes like a sled on even a dusting of snow. My M and E both stay home in that weather. I drove around a SUV on those days. The worst is getting stuck while it's starting to snow where everything your doing becomes second to rushing home for the car to hit the garage. Hate it but not worht the hassle for the 4-5 storms we get a year, getting two sets of snows.

Well i recieved 2 wheels today UPS seems to have lost the other two they searched for hours at the terminal and they cant be found.

Well i unpackaged them and I hate the wheels, I am so not wanting to put these on I wish they have tires for the rears for the OEM rims I would be much happier, Oh well Ill tough it out I guess.

I got my MSW Type 14s mounted with Dunlop Winte Sport M3s and really liked them. Had them put on the car last Wednesday and IMHO they looked really great on the car...and then my wife promptly rear ended a Honda CRV on Thursday on the West Side Highway...

Dealer estimates $9,000+ repair, including a new hood and radiator. Just got the confo from insurance company and shop today - but won't have car back until 2 January at the earliest...so I'm without the E63 this holiday season.

But I digress...I really liked the Type 14s on the E63, looked 'right' on the car.

Tough break Rkao, I drive the West side daily for work.
I have the MSW type 12 not the 14's, I just saw the 14 they look just like the E350 Sport wheels for 08, thats why you like them. I guess the tire rack ran out of the 14's.

I put them on the car tonight myself since I have a lift and all equipment in my house.

I took the car for a spin, I HATE IT, car handles like crap and spins out with full throttle inputs, I guess I will have to behave. They look ok but the car is dirty I will hope to try these out Thursday since snow is in the forecast. The reason i got them is because every year I refuse to take an SUV or buy snows for the winter and I get stuck all the time mid day in a storm and have to tow myself home with the flatbed service.

I was about to make the same post! They're out of 12s, so I just put 14s with Blizzaks on my E55 wagon. They look great and I'm shocked how quiet they are.

Sorry about the accident!

I have the Blizark also - they are a great tire - remember that new tires have residual release compound on them and it takes about 400-500 miles to wear it off. Until it is gone they will be slippery.

Well, since I had them installed in Florida (you can imagine the reaction I got), I have 1,300 miles before I get to snow.

Which will be next Thursday.

Yeah, I have the type 12's too. Not the best looking things, but I console myself in knowing that I'm keeping my AMG rims salt free and everyone who sees the car knows I have snowies on it...

And on the traction issue in the dry... you can't have your cake and eat it too... All the things that make the tire work in the snow kill you in the dry... with the larger sipes and grooves combined with the narrower tread, there is no way you are going to hook up at full throttle. Actually, I find if you punch it at any speed under 25 you boil 'em!

Any suggestions to light these suckers up to burn that compound off?

I am nuerotic enough to swap these on and off with the weather forecast like I used to do when i was much younger I casnt change my driving habits that easily. Since I have a low rise lift and all the pneumatic tools its a 25 min job for me solo.

BenzoMan, I understand your frustrations vis a vis the traction characteristics of the snow tires on dry pavement - but guaranteed you'll see them differently after today's storm.

The summer performance radials aren't much good when the ambient temperature falls below 40F so once winter really arrives - like in January or February when daytime temps don't get much above 20-25F, their traction would fall way off even on dry pavement on sunny days.

Been out driving in the beast, took it over the R500. Blasting around in the snow like an idiot. Car handles great up till the drifts. I finally figured out how to attach pictures... yeah, the rims are ugly, but the performance, priceless!
